Great beach, family friendly for young children, good pool, but need transport and strains in summer

Nice modern and clean villa for 6 on (mostly) beautiful bay with good kitchen, aircon, balcony, TV with wide range of freeview type channels. Nearly all UK families during our July 2013 visit having expected it to be a bit more international. Friendly and helpful reception and cleaning staff but pool rules rather strict as only limited number of loungers when busy! The beach is fantastic - not huge but very nearby, sandy and not too busy + offers great snorkelling and shallow waters for the kids. The circular bay itself is very nice save for one particular concrete monstrosity of a hotel on the other side of the bay! BUT beware in high season the local electricity grid cut out during 2 of our 11 evenings - due to local overload we presume. Not great if mid meal preparation! If sleeping 6 the sofa bed downstairs gets a bit much for adults after a few days, though it isn't bad, as sofa beds go. Fab beach just a few mins walk past the excellent (though not large) infinity pool. Beware the pool had to be closed during 2 out of 11 days we stayed due to stray toddler poos requiring a reflush. Not a great deal of entertainment laid on at the pool for kids if that's your thing so don't expect too much that way though there are occasional bits and pieces. Small supermarkets not far away but have to climb steep steps or longer walk round. Local restaurants and bars surprisingly quiet on late July evenings as people economise and stay in resorts or self cater. Eating out often rather expensive for quality of food provided. Goody Goody bar on bay has good childrens' play area including bouncy castle and 2 big trampolines for 3 Euros/child/day. Sa Paella restaurant on the sea front has a reasonable menu and great location but again not cheap but great, friendly service. Alas the same could not be said of Whites Bar in White Sands resort itself which we found to be ok food wise but overpriced for what was provided and the service often disappointingly poor. I fear they're used to a fairly steady stream when people can't face a drive/walk elsewhere and it shows :( As a consequence it often wasn't that busy except at peak times. To get anywhere else on the island you either walk up the hill to the occasional buses to Mahon, Fornells or Es Mercadel or you need to hire a vehicle. Best deals seemed to be through reception rather than nearby outlets. Oh, there is a local road train mornings and evenings but no timetable and it only runs around the Arenal d'en Castell area for 6 Euros per person return. Didn't seem worth it. Recommend the big (but not too big) Aqua Park outside Ciutedella in the north of the island but you really have to hire a car to get there or arrange shortened bus excursion through resort. The old centre of Ciutedella itself is well worth visiting and stay for the evening if you can (need car) to enjoy the atmosphere and peruse the many stalls. It's reasonably straightforward to take the bus at 2.50 Euros per person one way to Mahon and explore the harbours. The yellow boat trips aren't too expensive and give a great feel for the sights and history of the place. Overall it is very good for families with young children who don't want a kids club and have own transport or are happy to stay put and mostly self cater. The beaches are a highlight and the accommodation itself is very reasonably priced.

Schön gelegenes Hotel in Strandnähe
