The Cavalier Hotel

It was the height of fashion in the 1920s. It is still elegant and has nice public lounges. The new building blocks what would have been its ocean view, but the justly famous beach is accessible by a short walk. Orion's in the new building was a spectacular location for a wedding reception. Our only complaint was that the shower in the tiled bathroom had been made wheelchair-accessible without adequate protection from flooding.

I recently spent one night at this hotel in order to be close to the beach as a friend I was with had never visited Virginia Beach before. I'd lived in Virginia Beach for many years until I recently relocated to Maryland but decided to come back home to visit. Most folks from Virginia Beach know better than to stay at off-brand hotels near the beach because of the potential for a bad experience. Let me just say, this theory remains true. It was last minute however, and this was all that was available. The hotel was in real need of a renovation (even though the property we stayed in was said to be the newer property). While one front desk clerk was polite upon check-in, the rest of the stay went downhill. The hallways had a moldy/wet dog type of smell to them as did the room. The linens were shabby and old, the bathroom had water damage, and the carpet was filthy. Our television made a loud cracking/popping sort of noise before blowing out completely. I was not happy at all. I called the front desk to talk about the linens and the condition of the room as well as the broken television and the staff was rude and defensive from the onset of the call. I inquired about being moved to a new room. The staff member told me the entire hotel was booked which was a lie because I'd checked room availability online prior to calling downstairs and there was still vacancy. I then asked about getting a refund if they could not fix the tv and change out the linens. The rude staff member told me I'd have to pay even if they could not resolve the issue with the tv and room cleanliness. It was frustrating because I came to the hotel and accepted the rate of the room based on the hotel's ability to provide all of the amenities they'd advertised only to find out that they were unwilling to hold up their end of the agreement. In a name brand hotel, even though they make mistakes, they are always willing to accommodate guests and ensure that their experience is a good one by either moving the guest to a new room, awarding them points, awarding them a complimentary stay, or just giving them a refund altogether. They do this because they have someone to answer to and a reputation to protect. The customer experience is always top priority. When you stay at places like this that are not held to such standards, but are more concerned with making a dollar, this is what you get. And thus, this is why most residents know better than to frequent or stay at an off brand hotel such as this one. Do not waste your money unless the room arrangement and hotel cleanliness is not at the top of your list. The location and position of the hotel is poorly represented on the website as well. There truly is no such thing as a real ocean front/ocean view room at this property so don't be tricked. My "ocean view" room was actually over the parking lot with a side-eyed "sort of" view of some of the ocean...Save your money.

My boyfriend and I loved this hotel! We were there over Memorial Day weekend which can be a nightmare but not there. The Cavalier Oceanfront is on the beach but further enough down the beach that it is away from all the college, partying kids. We were early for our check in and they were very accommodating and got us a room early. The complimentary valet parking is great!!! I have referred this hotel to someone already and cant wait to stay there again! This is one online hotel you can believe...what you see is really whats there!

Check in went good. We decided to eat in the hotel's lounge. We charged the food to the room. We went to the room and got ready for bed and went to sleep. At 1:30 in the morning the front desk manager called me to get a credit card to pay for the food from dinner and stated that since the room was prepaid that we could not charge the room. The toilet was cut off, the ice machines did not work. I will never stay here again.

Good locality, accomodation and good staff. I ould defenitley recommend to other. However, there are two buildings and one is old and the other is new. Old building does not have any facility.

The GOOD... The location couldn't be beat! I'm orgionialy from Virgina Beach and was there to visit relatives so I know the beach area well. The Cavalier is right on the north end of the Virginia Beach Boardwalk so you are close to the action if you want it but off the beaten path so that you can enjoy the quite of if you prefer. We had an Ocean View Room which had a nice little balcony where you could sit and gaze down the beach and enjoy the breezes. The room was clean and the beds were the most comfortable I've slept in away from home. The bathroom was showing some age but was clean and serviced well by the cleaning staff... sorry for all the sand guys! The desk staff needs a few lessons from Disney World... nice but not friendly. The valet staff was awesome... friendly and quick! And the dining room staff was great with the food better than good. They get my vote for the best She Crab Soup I had while visiting this time out of the 3 places I ordered it on this trip. NOT SO GOOD The dining room was understaffed for Saturday morning buffet and somehow between the front desks not clarifying my reservation "type" and total lack of staff in the dinining room that morning... I was not given the information that the breakfast was not included in my "package". So I paid $16 for a scrambled egg and cup of coffee as I went to the buffet line rather than ordering from the menu.. BEWARE... if you book through Orbitz you probably do not have the "package" that includes the breakfast buffet. Be sure to ask and then just order from the menu if its not included with your room. And... bring your own beach towels... the ones offered off the deck are skimpy little things. All in all... one of the best places I've stayed at the Beach outside of renting a beach home and Highly recommended.

When we arrived live music was playing by the pool area so I felt very special. We had a great time. However, we ordered she crab soup and they were out so the food got out of order and some were eating while others waited.

this is an older hotel but very charming. It had the best water pressure in the shower, better even than we have at home. the beds however were extremely soft and uncomfortable

I was under the impression that the Hotel we were staying at was right on the beach (which was why I chose this hotel) But when we got there they informed me that there is 2 Cavalier Hotels. One is on the Hill across the street and the other one is on the Beach. I think they need to be more specific in the listing. And the room was TINY!! was not happy at all spent a lot of money to be NOT on the beach.

The hotel was in a nice location - the beach area was not over-crowded since it was not part of the boardwalk. The pool and restaurants were very nice and it was very convenient for beach use (we stayed in the ocean front building). The staff was very friendly and helpful and did their best to meet our needs. The only complaints we had were that the ice machines and soda machines were often empty on our floor - and the room a/c units are very loud (and the halls are not air conditioned!).
