Kirkko rakennettiin alkujaan kristityn hallitsijan, keisari Justiniuksen kunniaksi vuonna 537, mutta 1400-luvulla ottomaanit muuttivat kirkon moskeijaksi. Vaikka Hagia Sofian uljasta pääsalia hallitsevat suuret kalligrafia-kyltit, on rakennuksessa yhä käynnissä entisöintityö, jonka tarkoituksena on kaivaa maalin alta esiin alkuperäisiä mosaiikkeja.Yerebatan Sarnicin maanalaiset vesisäiliöt: Suureen, 500-luvulla rakennettu vesisäilöön mahtuu 80000 kuutiometriä vettä. Vesisäiliöstä johdettiin aikoinaan puhdasta vettä eri palatseihin ja esimerkiksi Topkapi-palatsiin. Säilöön on rakennettu kävelyteitä ja atmosfäärinen valaistus. Säilössä on myös pieni kahvila. Top Kapin palatsialue: Tämän palatsin suojissa Ottomaani-sulttaanit pitivät hovia ja hallitsivat 1400-luvulta aina 1900-luvulle asti. Sultanahmetin niemessä (Seraglio) ja Marmaran-meren rannassa sijaitseva Topkapi ei ole samanlainen yksittäinen rakennus kuin palatsit esimerkiksi Euroopassa, vaan koostuu monista puistojen keskelle sijoitetuista huviloista ja paviljongeista. Grand Bazaar: Kauniiden holvien varaan katettu Suuri Basaari on labyrinttimainen kaupankäynnin keskus. Basaariin päätyy kuin sattumalta, sillä se on hyvin maastottu vanhan kaupungin keskelle ja Suleimanin moskeijan juurelle. Alue on täynnä kauppakujia, liikkeitä ja pieniä ostoskeskuksia, joihin pujahdetaan suoraan kadulta.
