Description

Uncover the Windy City’s exceptional architecture as you stroll between historic department stores, luxurious hotels and towering office buildings. With a volunteer from the Chicago Architecture Center leading the way, explore the work of Chicago’s ambitious architects on this walking tour.

Wander up and down Michigan Avenue and State Street as you discover the beautiful buildings and parks featured in the Loop, the city centre's vibrant commercial district. Learn about the great architectural landmarks of Michigan Avenue and State Street, with glimpses inside beautiful buildings from the 1890s-1930s. Highlights include the dazzling interiors of the Palmer House Hotel and the Chicago Cultural Center.

Just before the turn of the century, architects were also busy at work designing Marshall Fields’ newest retail location, now owned by Macy’s. Head over to this classic example of neo-Renaissance style and admire the iconic bronze clocks at its corners.

Continue on to the Reliance building, whose early adoption of large plate glass windows help earn it a coveted place on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby, at the Sullivan Center, hear stories about famed architect Louis Sullivan before wrapping up your excursion in front of the Palmer House Hilton, a renowned hotel which has been rebuilt 3 times, once after tragically burning down in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
