Didn't like repeated auto emails asking for self check in and credit card details for incidentals. Didn't like silly health and safety window locks that didn't allow airflow into room. Fans are not at all adequate on hot days. I wonder where health and safety stands if one faints due to the heat on hot days or the risk or access if there is a fire. I did like that reception staff was very helpful to find me another room on the cooler side of the building. TVs need upgrading to Smart TVs.

Awful

Great location, lobby and restaurant refurbished and welcoming. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms on the other hand absolutely horrendous. Beds were tiny with rock hard mattresses and one equally unforgiving pillow each. Decor hasn’t been changed since the 80s (so expect 50 year old bizarre fake grey wall tiles in the bedroom, and bathrooms which need tearing out). The lingering smell of cigarette smoke from the old carpets was grim and added to the overall feeling of neglect. Don’t waste your money here, there are plenty of other great options in the City.

The front of house staff and the cleanliness was very good. Confusing access to the property though with stairs at both entrances and no indication of where the reception area was situated. This proved difficult as I was accompanying a person who was registered blind and carrying luggage; negotiating stairs The room while very clean and comfortable was extremely hot and there was no way to open the window. There was a ceiling fan but it was slow and ineffective. This made staying in the room for any length of time very uncomfortable. Outside the hotel there is major work being carried out and so walking into the town was difficult but that is not their fault. However one entrance had an overflowing ashtray beside the doors and the smell wasnt very pleasant. We ate a a fairly good meal in the hotel bar, but considering it is a 4 star hotel the standard didn't reflect a 4 star rating. The breakfast was very good though but the front of house was a little 'brusque' in her manner although to be fair they were rather busy. I declined our original table as we were to be seated right next to the busy buffet area which faced rows of Sainsburys trolleys in the car park outside.

Good service, updated public areas, room bit tired

The public areas have been updated, and the room itself was good, but the bathroom (rm 300) was outdated and tired. No Air conditioning in the room either, just a fan. Given this was a "hot" day, we had to open the windows to get some non-sniffling air on, but then you get the traffic noise. Staff were good though. Car park was hard to find. I broke this hotel based, partly, on parking. They didn't say it is an extra £9.... you can pay to stay overnight in Sainsbury's car park for £7.50... which we weren't told.

Where to start. We attempted to get the car parked on arrival. No idea where to go. You basically have to go into the basement of sainsburys car park and find a portal into the Copthorne area. To make things more challenging, it’s dimly lit and not signed. We did about 20 circuits of the car park before we finally spotted the right area. I then paid £13 for 24 hours so we didn’t need to face the ordeal again. Got to the room. It was incredibly dated. The bathroom must have been from the 1970s. No mixer taps. Shower curtain on an ancient shower above a bath. Tiny twin beds. Sad digestive biscuit offering. Drab colours. Everything outside was either grey or being dug up. This was a trip purely of convenience and I’d never recommend any kind of holiday here in a million years. Pros - it’s clean. It’s near the city centre and station. It wasn’t even cheap. Didn’t bother with breakfast for an extra £22!
