Overview

Begin an unforgettable journey across nearly 12,000 km² (7,500 square miles) of extraordinary landscapes shaped by salt, volcanoes, deserts, and colourful lagoons within the breathtaking Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna Reserve.

The immense white expanse of the Uyuni Salt Flats creates a surreal scenery unlike anywhere else on Earth. During the dry season (May to October), the surface hardens into endless geometric patterns formed naturally by crystalline salt polygons. In the rainy season (November to March), a thin layer of water transforms the Salar into a spectacular natural mirror, perfectly reflecting the sky and creating one of the most mesmerising landscapes in the world.

Throughout the journey, discover high-altitude deserts, flamingo-filled lagoons, steaming geysers, volcanic landscapes, and remote Andean scenery that make this expedition one of South America’s most unforgettable travel experiences.

Tunupa Volcano

Enjoy scenic stops along the way for carefully selected photo opportunities, capturing the unique beauty of the salt flats. We then continue north for several kilometres towards the majestic Tunupa Volcano. Along the way, you will visit the Coquesa community, home to the fascinating Aymara mummies preserved in volcanic caves. The journey continues to the Tunupa viewpoint, ascending by vehicle to high altitude, close to the crater. From here, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Uyuni Salt Flats in all their grandeur—an awe-inspiring perspective that showcases the true scale and beauty of this natural wonder.

Tahua (Pass by)

Tahua (Pass by)

In the morning, we head to Incahuasi Island, a stunning oasis in the middle of the salt flats, known for its towering giant cacti and breathtaking panoramic views. We then continue towards Mala Mala Bay, located at the opposite side of the Salar, offering a quieter and more remote perspective of this vast landscape. From there, the journey leads us to the remarkable Galaxy Cave, an extraordinary site where you can observe ancestral burials and fascinating petrified cactus formations—an experience that beautifully blends nature, history, and mystery.

Aguaquiza - Las Galaxias

Enjoy scenic stops along the way for carefully selected photo opportunities, capturing the ever-changing landscapes of the Altiplano. Step visit with photo stops. To the south are Cañapa gaps, Stinking, Chiarkota, Honda and Ramadita, where large numbers of flamingos can be founded. Other birds, such as geese and Andean gulls accompany the flamingos in these lagoons flanked by snow-capped volcanoes that have a green skirt down (brava straw yareta and thola).

Siloli Desert

We venture into a remote desert of sand and pebbles, where the landscapes unfold in beautiful natural tones, creating a striking and ever-changing scenery as we make our way deeper into the Altiplano. By the end of the day, we arrive at Hotel Tayka del Desierto, a unique stone hotel located in the heart of the Siloli Desert. This cosy and remote property offers private rooms with en-suite bathrooms and hot water, ensuring comfort in the middle of this extraordinary environment. In the evening, you will enjoy a carefully prepared dinner while gazing at one of the clearest night skies in the world—an unforgettable experience under a blanket of stars.

Day 3: Tayka del Desierto - Uyuni

Arbol de Piedra (Pass by)

At dawn, we set out in search of the impressive Sol de Mañana Geysers, arriving at the first light of day when geothermal activity is at its most dramatic. This is the highest point of the route, at nearly 5,000 metres above sea level, where the air is crisp and the landscape feels otherworldly. You will witness steaming fumaroles and bubbling mud pools in shades of red, grey, and ochre—an extraordinary geothermal field where the earth seems alive beneath your feet. The journey then continues through the striking desert and Salar de Chalviri, a landscape of remarkable contrasts where white mineral deposits, ocher desert tones, and deep blue waters blend into a truly unique दृश्य. To complete this experience, there is the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing bath in the Polques Hot Springs, surrounded by this surreal and peaceful high-altitude environment.

Laguna Colorada

Enjoy scenic stops along the way for carefully selected photo opportunities, capturing the dramatic beauty of the high-altitude landscapes. We then stop for lunch near Laguna Colorada, one of the most extraordinary highlights of the journey. This striking red lagoon is the main nesting site for three species of flamingos, whose presence adds life and elegance to the scenery. The lagoon’s unique coloration comes from algae and plankton activated by sunlight and wind, which also influence the delicate pink tones of the flamingos’ plumage. A truly remarkable setting to enjoy lunch, surrounded by nature at its most vibrant and unique.
