Delve into the authentic Lower Rhine with a true German local.
This small-group walking tour (max. 3 guests) takes you through medieval streets, meaningful WWII history sites, wide scenic viewpoints, and genuinely off-the-beaten-path places most visitors — and even many locals — never get to see.
Your tour begins in Rheinberg’s charming old town, where narrow lanes and historic buildings reveal how this Lower Rhine community developed over the centuries.
From here, we make a short stop at a nearby Commonwealth War Cemetery to reflect on the dramatic final phase of World War II, including the Rheinwiesenlager and Operation Plunder, the massive Allied crossing of the Rhine that took place in this region in 1945.
Next, we visit Kloster Kamp and its stunning terraced gardens (subject to availability). Founded in 1123 as the first Cistercian monastery in Germany, the site is often called the “Sanssouci of the Lower Rhine.” Its sweeping Baroque-style garden layout, hillside terraces, and panoramic views make it one of the most beautiful cultural landmarks in the region.
Between Kloster Kamp and our next stop, we drive a short segment on the German Autobahn, which famously has no general speed limit. We travel safely and responsibly, but if traffic and conditions allow, you may experience that classic “German Autobahn feeling.”
We then head up Halde Rheinpreußen, a former mining spoil heap topped with an iconic 103-meter (339-foot) red mining lamp — a striking symbol of the region’s industrial heritage. From the viewpoint, you’ll enjoy impressive wide-angle views of the Lower Rhine landscape.
In Orsoy, we take a relaxed walk along the Rhine embankment, passing the floodgate, the old fortification lines, and continuing into the town’s historic centre. If the timing fits and the local grill is open (closed on Mondays), you’ll have the chance to try an authentic Currywurst — Germany’s most iconic comfort food (optional, purchased on site).
Our tour ends with a special hidden gem location — a lost & unknown place (not named in advance).
Throughout the tour, you’ll also gain insight into the deeper identity of the region . Hear about it from someone who was born and rooted here: someone who knows the Lower Rhine in all its beauty and imperfections… and loves it all the same.
This tour is perfect for curious guests who want to go beyond the usual highlights and truly experience the Lower Rhine in depth, seeing parts of Germany that most visitors never encounter.
