The Nightly Observing Programme (NOP) is Kitt Peak’s most popular nighttime experience, running year-round and welcoming both new and returning stargazers. Begin your evening with a visit to the Visitor Centre, where you’ll explore exhibits about the observatory’s history and the science of astronomy.
After a light meal, your docent will guide you through an introduction to the night sky, helping you identify stars and constellations as the sun sets and darkness falls. Step outdoors to observe the stars with high-powered binoculars, learning to navigate the constellations and spot celestial wonders. The highlight of the evening is entering one of the observatory domes, where you’ll view deep space objects through a professional telescope, guided by expert staff.
This immersive programme is designed for comfort and accessibility, featuring lift access to the observatory level. Warm clothing, closed-toe shoes, and a jacket are recommended for your comfort at high elevation. Enjoy a light meal with your choice of turkey, vegetarian, or gluten-free sandwich, or bring your own if you have dietary restrictions. The kitchen cannot guarantee allergen-free meals.
