What you can expect

Experience the wonders of the universe from the summit of Kitt Peak, just outside Tucson, where daylight hours reveal a world of astronomical discovery. With a range of guided tour options, you can focus your visit on a single iconic telescope or combine multiple observatories for a more immersive journey. Select from tours of the Nicholas U. Mayall 4-meter Telescope, the KPNO 2.1-meter Telescope, the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope, or opt for a combo tour to explore two or all three in one visit.

Each docent-led tour brings you inside and outside these remarkable observatories, sharing stories of groundbreaking discoveries, like Vera Rubin’s dark matter research and the ongoing work of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. At the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope, immerse yourself in the Science on a Sphere audiovisual experience and explore interactive exhibits at the new Taṣogida Ki: Centre for Astronomy Outreach.

Combo tours offer deeper insight into the evolution of astronomical research, with the all-day option including breaks for lunch (available for purchase) and time to enjoy the mountain’s unique atmosphere. Please note that tours involve extensive walking and stairs; comfortable shoes are essential, and most facilities are not wheelchair-accessible.

Your adventure concludes back at the visitor centre, leaving you inspired by the discoveries and stories of Kitt Peak, with time to further explore or relax in the mountain setting.
