Enjoy a shared sunset experience at Pico do Arieiro, one of Madeira’s most iconic mountain viewpoints. From 1,818 metres above sea level, watch the sky change colour above Madeira’s dramatic peaks and valleys.
This experience is available in Basic and Standard versions. Please check your selected option carefully before booking, as inclusions, flexibility and pickup arrangements vary depending on the version chosen.
In all versions, the main experience is the sunset at Pico do Arieiro. Guests may also choose to independently explore nearby viewpoints such as Ninho da Manta and the Stairway to Heaven viewpoint, also known as Miradouro da Pedra Rija. This optional walk offers a different perspective over the mountain landscape before sunset.
The Stairway to Heaven visit is entirely optional and self-guided. It is subject to official access rules, weather, visibility, safety, trail conditions and availability on the day. This is not a guided hiking service or a full PR1 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike.
Guests planning to visit the Stairway to Heaven viewpoint should head out promptly on arrival and manage their time carefully. The walk takes approximately 30 to 35 minutes each way from the Pico do Arieiro parking area. For guests choosing this optional self-guided walk, the recommended turnaround point is the Stairway to Heaven / Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint. Please do not continue further along the trail, as this may make it impossible to return to the vehicle on time.
The return transfer normally departs around 30 minutes after sunset. The vehicle cannot wait indefinitely, as this would affect other guests. Guests who are not back at the agreed return time may need to arrange their own return.
Guests who prefer not to do the optional walk can relax near the main viewpoint and enjoy the sunset, scenery and changing colours from the main Pico do Arieiro area.
Mountain weather can change quickly, and clear views, sunset colours or visibility cannot be guaranteed. Selected options may offer an optional Weather Retry add-on for worst-case weather situations, allowing one rebooking to another available date if conditions on the day seriously affect the experience, subject to availability and the selected option or add-on terms. Normal cloud, partial cloud cover, or changing mountain conditions do not qualify.
If conditions at Pico do Arieiro are not favourable, an alternative sunset viewpoint may be used where appropriate.
Warm clothing and suitable footwear are recommended, as temperatures at Pico do Arieiro can be much lower than in Funchal, especially after sunset. Toilets and restaurants at Pico do Arieiro may be closed after 18:00, so guests should plan accordingly before departure.
This experience is designed for guests who want a convenient way to enjoy sunset in Madeira’s high mountains, with the option to stay near the main viewpoint or add a short self-guided viewpoint walk if conditions and timing allow.
