Lake Chuzenji

Formed over 20,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption, it sits about 1,269 metres above sea level, offering cool temperatures and stunning natural beauty. The lake is surrounded by lush forests, hiking trails, and scenic spots perfect for boating, fishing, and picnicking. Visitors especially love it during autumn when vibrant fall foliage colours the landscape, and in winter, the serene icy views create a magical atmosphere. Nearby attractions include Chuzenji Temple and Kegon Falls. Accessible by road, the lake is a must-visit for nature lovers seeking tranquility and fresh mountain air. There is no entrance fee to visit the lake itself.

Kegon Falls

Kegon Falls is a stunning 97-meter waterfall near Lake Chuzenji in Nikko National Park, formed 20,000 years ago by lava flows from Mount Nantai. It’s one of Japan’s top three waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy free access to the upper observation deck for panoramic views or take a paid lift ride (¥570 adults, ¥340 children) down 100 metres for a closer look at the waterfall’s base. The lift operates from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (hours vary seasonally). Accessible by bus from Nikko Station, the falls are beautiful year-round—vibrant green in spring, colourful in autumn, and icy in winter. Nearby attractions include Lake Chuzenji and the Akechidaira Ropeway. The upper deck is wheelchair accessible, but the lift is not. Kegon Falls is a must-see for nature lovers and photographers seeking breathtaking scenery.

Nikko National Park

The park is free to enter, with no general admission fee, allowing visitors to explore its natural beauty and cultural sites freely. However, some specific attractions within the park, like Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Kegon Falls lift, and certain temples, require separate entrance fees. Nikko Tosho-gu

Visitors can also explore the Shoyo-en Garden and the Treasure House, which display Buddhist art and artefacts. Admission to the main hall is ¥400, with additional tickets for the garden and treasure house. The combined ticket including Taiyuin Mausoleum costs ¥900. Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park

Shinkyo Bridge

The Shinkyo Bridge, or Sacred Bridge, is a striking red-lacquered wooden arch bridge spanning the Daiya River at the entrance to Nikko’s sacred shrines and temples. Dating back over 400 years, it is considered one of Japan’s most beautiful and culturally significant bridges. The bridge symbolises the gateway to the spiritual world and is associated with legends of divine protection. Pedestrians must pay a small fee of ¥300 to cross the bridge, but the view and photo opportunities are well worth it. The bridge’s vibrant colour contrasts beautifully with the surrounding natural scenery, especially in autumn and winter. Shinkyo is easily reachable by foot from Nikko Toshogu Shrine.

Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura

Optional stop: Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura is an immersive, 122-acre cultural theme park in Nikko, Japan, that meticulously recreates daily town life from the historic Edo period (1603–1867). The park serves as a living history museum where visitors walk among samurai residences, ninja training grounds, and bustling merchant streets, interacting with staff who are fully costumed and in character as period citizens. Akechidaira Observation Area

The Akechidaira Observation Deck is a premier panoramic vantage point in Nikko, perched at an altitude of 1,473 metres and famously known as the only spot where visitors can view Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji, and Mount Nantai simultaneously in a single frame. Located near the top of the ascending, one-way Irohazaka Winding Road, it is highly celebrated for its spectacular autumn foliage vistas. However, please note that the upper observation deck and its connecting ropeway are currently completely closed for a major infrastructure renovation project until approximately August 31, 2027, though the lower plateau base area remains open with a rest house and free parking.
