Discover the wonders of the night sky at Kitt Peak National Observatory, home to the largest collection of astronomical instruments in the Northern Hemisphere. Your Dark Sky Discovery experience begins at sunset, nearly 7,000 feet above sea level, where you’ll witness the sky transform from day to night. Start with a visit to the Visitor Centre to explore engaging exhibits about astronomy and the observatory’s history.
After a light meal, your guide will introduce you to the basics of astronomy and help you identify stars and constellations. As darkness falls, step outdoors to observe the night sky with a variety of telescopes, learning to navigate the constellations and spot celestial wonders. The highlight of the evening is entering one of the observatory domes, where you’ll view deep space objects through a professional telescope, guided by expert staff.
This programme features a small group setting, typically no more than 14 guests per guide, allowing for more time at the telescope and personalised attention. The Dark Sky Discovery programme is scheduled on nights away from the full moon for optimal stargazing. Please note, this programme is not ADA accessible; for accessible experiences, the Nighttime Observing Programme is recommended.
Warm clothing, closed-toe shoes, and a jacket are essential for comfort at high elevation. Enjoy a light meal with your choice of turkey, vegetarian, or gluten-free sandwich, or bring your own if you have dietary restrictions. Service animals are welcome.
Your evening concludes at the Visitor Centre, leaving you with unforgettable memories of Arizona’s pristine night sky.
