The Porte de Bourgogne is located at the end of the former Salinières moat, now the Cours Victor-Hugo (formerly Rue des Fossés), on the site of the former medieval Porte des Salinières. It marks the city's official entrance on the ancient road leading to Paris. Tourny wanted it to accompany the Place Royale (now Place de la Bourse), and consecrated it to Prince Monseigneur le Duc de Bourgogne on January 24, 1757.
For a time, it was also known as the Porte Napoléon to celebrate the Emperor's arrival in Bordeaux in 1808.
