Great neighborhood! Quirky place. Interesting!
I loved the neighborhood. This place was dingier than I expected, and I arrived after dark, so the parking was a little hard to see. The building didn't feel 100% safe. There was a bit of a dilapidated and sketchy feel to it. The check in took a very long time, and the people living there were very nice, but just that...living there. No big deal, but security felt a bit loose, children were running about, a weed smell (I didn't really mind), and when I entered my first floor room, the windows and storm windows were open to the outside. It was snowing, so this was unusual. The room had a space heater, which was off when I got there, and a radiator at the head of the bed, also off, but that started at some point in the night, so I was cold at first, but warmed up well by 2am or so. Shared bathroom was ok.
I LOVED the quirky old furniture and decorations, but the effect was a little bit off. I can't quite explain it. The front desk guy, who was very wary at first, was actually great when the blood curdling screaming started at about 1am. So I was VERY GLAD that he was on duty...and noted that the wariness comes with the territory. He was right there at the neighboring room from which the screaming was coming. He was AWESOME, banging on the door, asking what was wrong, asking them if he needed to come in there right away. Telling then to be quiet. I am pretty old, and have never stayed at a hotel with such a fast response to noise. He was the best! And I wasn't afraid at all.
