Very elegant is the lakefront with several 18th-century villas and the Tempio Voltiano. Among the most famous are Villa Olmo, a fine example of neoclassical architecture and the site of important exhibitions, and "La Rotonda," a villa built at the end of the 18th century and the seat of the Provincial Administration. Near the lakefront is the city's main square, dominated by the Broletto (the old municipal palace built in 1215). The square also houses the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most fascinating examples of Italian Gothic art. Finally, we recommend going up to visit the village of Brunate, accessible by a funicular railway, a landmark of the city, from which you can admire an evocative view around the Art Nouveau residences.
