Welcome to The 1868 R. H. Wood House
A true Registered Texas Historic Landmark...The R. H. Wood House, meticulously restored following nearly a 3-year renovation, introduces modern technology & luxury while preserving historical integrity! The son of one of Rockport`s founders, Richard Henry Wood (1846-1923) built this home in 1868. It is one of the oldest and most historically important homes in Rockport. Located in Rockport`s Cultural Arts District overlooking the Rockport harbor, the property is within walking distance to the beach, restaurants/cafes, shopping, festival grounds, fishing, museums, art galleries and much, much more! Please note that this is NOT a pet friendly home.
The home`s preservation work included a sensitive removal of non-historic additions, new foundation, insulation, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and state-of-the-art Smart Home technology. The two-story, 3,324-square-foot home with its gracious 10-foot ceilings sleeps 12 persons comfortably in 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths & 1 half-bath. Mature pecan trees shade the large fenced half-acre property and surround the new heated pool and spa that seats 10. The shallow lounging area is only 12 inches deep, suitable for children of all ages.
Events/Parties/Extra Guest - This beautiful home is a great place to have small events such as bridal showers and birthday celebrations. When booking this home with plans of having visitors over, you must contact the office to discuss event fees and deposits.
The outdoor kitchen with covered lounge area was built with reclaimed wood from an old barn in Iowa. It was designed to accommodate large gatherings around the pool, generous pool deck and yard. It is complemented by a wood-burning fireplace which features a Tuscan grill for cooking. This space would not be complete without a full restroom...shower, toilet, antique sink and custom urinal made out of a stainless steel beer keg!
The new adjacent covered parking area and driveway easily accommodates 4 cars and features one of the first electric car charging stations in Rockport. Bring your Tesla or other EV!
Morning coffee to afternoon tea or evening cocktails, the screened in porch is ideal for an insect and mosquito free zone while taking in the birding, wildlife, scenery or a good book. This wrap around porch has comfortable outdoor furnishings and dining area cooled by ceiling fans. The front porch is an excellent spot to watch Rockport`s 4th of July and holiday fireworks or to simply watch the morning sunrise over the bay.
For your outdoor entertainment, the home comes with a Sonos Sound system with speakers strategically placed around the pool, yard and inside the house.
To enhance your stay, the home features a choice of soaps, shampoos, and amenities by EO Products of Marin County, CA.--all sustainable organic products made from essential oils. Amenities have been carefully thought and provided for a first-class experience.
The Owners employed many green, earth-friendly methods in their work, and also salvaged and re-used as many of the original materials from the home as possible. The furnishings are an eclectic balance of both antiques and art collected by the Owner, with soft comfortable furnishings clad in removable washable slipcovers. The restoration is truly a labor of love.
The modern technologies include wireless internet, thermostatic controls, satellite TV and the electric car charging station. A specially designed high-velocity system provides AC & Heat centrally throughout the home. There are 4 fireplaces downstairs that were carefully restored and made operable with reproduction cast iron gas burning coal inserts. All 4 oak fireplace mantels with mirrors are original to the house.
The Library with table and lounge furniture provides a quiet place to read, assemble puzzles, play cards, board games, work if you must, or simply enjoy the coastal views through the front bay windows. There is also a display case containing interesting artifacts discovered during restoration.
Adjacent to the Library is a bedroom that features an early 1850`s rope Tester full-sized bed, fireplace and a closet converted to a half bath featuring an antique corner sink. This bedroom overlooks the pool and has a private door to the screened in porch.
The primary bedroom is home to a stunning antique 9` tall Victorian walnut queen-sized bed that survived the Galveston Hurricane of 1900. AND...the master bath will be a pleasant retreat with its` open shower plan for a luxurious soak in the restored `cowboy` bathtub adjacent to the fireplace.
The dining room showcases the home`s original beaded board walls where an antique dining table seats 8-10 comfortably. It is lit by a much talked about chandelier that is made out of old silver spoons.
In our family get-togethers, the kitchen is the main gathering spot. Our kitchen comes with all new top of the line appliances: Kitchen Aid side-by-side refrigerator w/filtered water & ice maker, DW, a four-burner gas stove/oven/microwave combination. Fully stocked with paper goods, coffee, cookwares, utensils and more for your cooking pleasure. With its` 5 foot long antique reproduction sink and wood countertops made from the house`s old roof rafters the kitchen is the true heart of this home. The adjacent counter height seating and `Lounge` area allows us to be part of the action without being in the kitchen. This area can easily accommodate many cooks for any large family meal or event.
The home was originally 1 story with a generous unfinished attic space. The c. 1880 staircase was sourced by the Owner from a house that was being torn down in Commerce, Tx. It was a rare find and once purchased it made the trip to Rockport in several long sections and parts all packed up into the Owner`s pickup truck. Viola!
The upstairs space with its exposed antique hand hewn beams is equally as inviting with 2 bedrooms, restroom, walk-in shower, laundry room and TV lounge. At the top of the stairs 2 sliding barn doors to the restroom and laundry room grace the hallway.
The TV lounge was the original attic space at 12` high ceilings with the proper furnishings and dormer window bed creates a quiet respite with a small window view south to the bay.
The North bedroom in the turreted attic space is a favorite of one of the Owner`s business partners who are 5`2` tall. This cozy room with low pitched ceilings, queen bed and dormer bed is also a favorite with the kids.
The West bedroom, at the opposite end of hall was added over the kitchen. King bed and 3 cozy twin beds in the dormer windows with seating/reading area was designed with young families in mind.
