Sunset Haven hands it over at the front door: a first-level end unit, full of light, with a commanding view of the tranquil Pamlico Sound and an oversized balcony where the hot tub runs all year round — sunset soaks in July, steam rising against a January sky, no season off. Kiteboarders and paddleboarders provide the entertainment — and when watching stops being enough, Kitty Hawk Kites is right next door for rentals and lessons.

Three Bedrooms, Three Baths, Zero Negotiating

The large open floor plan holds two king bedrooms and a third with two twins — each with its own bathroom — plus a queen sleeper in the living room, comfortably hosting eight. The stocked kitchen covers both coffee factions (traditional pot and Keurig) with island seating and a separate dining area, and a washer and dryer handle the practical side. Please note the pictured fireplace is decorative and non-working, and the unit does not offer a grill.

The Walk-Everywhere Address

The sound front pool and sun deck are steps away, restaurants are within walking distance, and the ocean beach and Rodanthe fishing pier are an easy 8–10 minute walk — both waters, no car. Your dog is welcome too ($150 plus tax per dog).

Excellent kiting, mixed reviews

I rarely spend time on these surveys because the owners/managers never post negative comments. I’ll provide a balanced, accurate review and see if it gets posted. In some ways, this place gets 5 stars, in others it gets 1 star. Pros: * The kiting setup is fantastic. ** It’s literally across the lawn from the Kitty Hawk Kites school. ** The lawn can get a little crowded, but it’s super convenient for setup, take-off and landing, and all just 60 seconds from your front door. ** There’s an air compressor at KHK for the kites, although it needs a little TLC. ** There are lockers at the garage level for your kite gear so you don’t have to haul it up and down the stairs every day. * The local staff are super friendly and helpful. * There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance * The unit as a whole was clean, spacious, and had a fabulous view of the sunset. * The kitchen was a great space for preparing meals. Cons: * You’re sharing walls, ceilings and floors with your neighbors. If they are noisy (e.g. barking dogs, running kids, etc) you are pretty much stuck with it. Cross your fingers for good neighbors. Frankly, given how little money they earn from letting tenants bring dogs, the owners would be better off just not allowing dogs at all in order to prevent the headaches for everyone all around. * Calling the pool shower a “shower" is being generous. It has no water pressure and you need one hand at all times to run the water - requiring gymnastic balancing skills to use it. * Although they provide a pool, they do not provide pool towels. * Depending on the unit you rent, there are windows with no blinds, so be prepared for some bright mornings. * The WiFi is spotty and will disconnect you fairly regularly * Watch out for the welcome letter you’ll get about 1 week before your stay. It’s not very clearly written and it may make you think you’ll need to pack a couple extra suitcases of stuff. Call ahead to find out what’s actually in the unit and what’s not so that you know what to pack. We will definitely return to the OBX for the amazing kiting, but we’re on the fence about whether we would rent this place again, the biggest problem being noisy, disrespectful neighbors. Maybe we’ll have better luck with that next time.

Stay in Wave 18

We enjoyed the location and our stay in Wave 18. The unit is, however, in need of some TLC. The king bed is very noisy due to an unattached headboard and some undetermined structural issue. The MBR fan makes a lot of noise until it gets up to speed. The toilet seat in the bathroom off the living area is missing a bolt and slips around. The washing machine sounds like it is on it's last legs. The middle heating element in the left side of the toaster doesn't work. On the positive side the cleaning lady does a first rate job.

Great Vacation!

We had such a great vacation week! The unit was so spacious, clean, comfortable and nice (but slightly worn) furnishings. The deck furniture wasn't very comfortable and looked weathered but watching the beautiful sunsets from the hot tub was amazing...a big benefit from staying on the sound side. We liked the open concept and the kitchen had plenty of room to move around and lots of storage. We cooked in the majority of the time and we were a bit disappointed the kitchen was lacking in some basics such as a strainer for pasta and some other utensils. Otherwise it had nice stainless appliances and tons of counter space. The living area was comfortable . We liked that the unit wasn't "over decorated" but noticed it lacked small touches like a lamp that plugged in even though it was placed on an end table. And I know we weren't there to watch TV but we don't go out at night so movie channels would have been nice verses basic cable. There was a fireplace as posted, but it was just for show which seemed odd. The master bedroom was also very spacious and lots of closet space. My only complaint there was the mattress. The actual mattress was thin and cheap with a Tempur-pedic topper. My back was bothering me toward the end of the week. And lastly, the one thing that was annoying that really can't be helped was the noise from upstairs. Who ever was above us walked heavily at ALL hours. They woke early and went to bed late. It was loud like they were in our unit. Also adding to the noise was construction outside even on the weekend. But in spite of all the minor issues we really enjoyed our stay! Everyone was very friendly, the pool was sparkling, the weather was perfect. We loved watching the kite surfers and all the activity on the sound. The restaurant and shops next door were very convenient, as we got in late the night we checked in and didn't feel like cooking. The food was good and service great. We loved the remote wild beauty of Rodanthe and really look forward to returning!

Very friendly service,beautiful views

My wife and I really enjoyed the condo. The only thing I was unhappy with was the condition of some of the furniture. The leather sofa was ready to be put the curb. It looked as though it had been left out in the weather too many times. Other than that, it was just we needed. It was our first vacation in 30 years without children. Thank you.

Great property, with minor flaws. Would stay again

Loved the location - away from the more touristy areas of the OBX. We're not kite boarders, but loved sitting on the balcony watching them. Condo was in good shape when we arrived, though it could have been a bit cleaner. Beach is only a short distance away and was never crowded. Biggest problem was WiFi. It was basically unusable during our stay. ISP had been out to work on it during the week, but didn't see any improvements. All-in-all, it was a nice vacation.

The Couch was in poor condition.

The Couch was in poor condition The leather /vinyl cushions were peeling. Had to use one of our blankets as a covering to sit in the couch and not get little pieces of peelings on our cloths. The Freezer would not stay cold enough seems there is an issue with the defrost circuitry in the Freezer since the bottom would collect Ice and had to be set at 8-9 to freeze in the freezer. The pipe that went from the garbage disposal to the drain trap was loose and was discovered when running the dishwasher the first time. wiped up the water under the sink and tightened the hand fitting that connected to the trap and the water leak was solved. Didn't know that some water had run down the drain pipe under the sink and to the unit below until we talked to the maintenance person. We had early check in and seems the floors were not mopped in the 2 king bedroom bathrooms. Feet would collect black that you would notice when showering. The unit reports that you can sleep 8 however when checking the Plates and coffee cups there were not enough. Had only 5 plates with chips and cereal bowls only had 5. The toaster had to be replaced during our stay since only half of the 4 slice toaster worked. Their are at least 5 light bulbs that need to be replaced in the unit. Recommend that the floor in the kitchen be made of tile and not hardwood flooring. When the maintenance man checked the refrigerator the feet of the refrigerator scratched the floor. The refrigerator was to close the wall causing poor circulation for the refrigerator . We pulled it out so there was 4-5 inches behind the refrigerator. You can see that the laminate flooring in front of the refrigerator is slightly warped from getting wet I suspect from previous leaks from the freezer thawing. These are the only reason I only gave 3 stars. I liked the location, Great we has a hot tube, and grill. Had plenty of dishes and silverware for the 4 of us Great sound system as I hooked up my computer to HDMI extra input and was able to play music to the installed system. Great touch. Great view of Kiteboarding and sunsets. Nice deck for sitting out and enjoying the view. Had a great relaxing vacation. Would rent here again.

Nice getaway

Beautiful place, very quiet. We enjoyed watching the kite boarding, and sitting out on the very large deck! Loved the location, it was perfect for all that was with us. Thought the rent at the resort for paddle boards and such was expensive so we rented from the camp ground down the street. The condo itself was clean and decorated nice. There was wear and tear on the living room furniture...but other then that it was great! The kitchen was stocked, but the pots and pans were in need of replacement. The baking ware also....not good. Loved this place and the vibe that went with it! We will be back and hopefully stay in the same unit. #26 Heart of Hatteras. Everything was as Doris from first flight rentals said it would be. No surprises. For restaurants we went to nags head, capt. georges. Excellent buffet. Loved being on the sound...the sunsets were amazing....and we could walk to ocean for the sunrise.

Gorgeous property, Awesome vacation!

The property was gorgeous, and the views were stunning. I loved the décor, detail, and spaciousness of the condo, and the huge patio with the private hot tub was amazing! Although we didn't participate in any activities on this trip, it was fun to watch the kiteboarders and paddle boarders in the Sound. The condo was very quiet and peaceful .. felt as if we had a private beach house! The condo appeared to be very clean, although I did find a live cockroach in the pots and pan cabinet on our last day. The owner / management did have pest control come out that afternoon to work in the kitchen area. The Wi-Fi had gone out upon on arrival, due to a storm that had hit. It did not get restored, in our unit at least, until the morning of our departure. This was a little irritating since several tenants called to complain, and we ended up increasing our service data plan to accommodate our usage. Our air conditioning unit had some issues, causing us to have no air one night (very hot!) and having a repair man two days in our unit. Although the two repairmen were friendly, we were not originally advised someone would be in our unit. That was disappointing since we had no way to secure any belongings we had wished to store away for our protection. We were also not made aware that the hot tub maintenance lady would be coming in to our condo during the day, or that she was going to stop in during the evening to check our air conditioner (during this outage issue). Lastly, the lights in the pool area were never addressed, making a night swim nearly impossible. And after a second phone call, the 2nd floor stairwell light was replaced so as not to create a mishap when using. Overall, my experience was pleasant and I would recommend this property. I would only advise the next guests to be prepared for some hiccups .. hoping though that they wouldn't occur again. Thanks for making our OBX experience a fairly pleasant one :) Kathy - Ohio
