had potential

Could have been a great old style hotel. But not maintained very well. Carpet in the room was horribly stained. Traveling with a colleague and their room carpet was only slightly better. The entire hotel smelled musty everywhere. A/C cooled the room, but did not remove moisture. Shower needed grout cleaning, badly. I was hoping for much better.

Great location in Shanghai's French Concession

Set in gardens in the French Concession, rare in Shanghai, this beautiful old hotel is close to many Western-style restaurants and bars but within walking distance of Chinese alternatives and two Metro stations. Air-conditioned taxis can easily be obtained at the gate which can take you anywhere else. Excellent service and comfortable rooms in a 1920s - 30s setting, it has far more character than most hotels in the city.

Good hotel with a strong sense of history

We enjoyed staying here very much. The location is good with numerous restaurants nearby. The "old" part of the hotel (there is a modern block across the road) is a delightful building, the rooms are traditionally furnished and very confortable, and the staff were immensely helpful. The swimming pool in the new block is a great facility too. There is not much in the way of a bar but otherwise we were very happy with everything.

One night at donghu

Dear, I booked the hotel for my business partners who arrived in shanghai very late. We came to the hotel but it was very bad behavior from the reception lady. And didnt even show us to the room so we had to look for it. There was no wifi nor the breakfast included in the room as it showed on your website. Very nice decoration as we all agreed but we had to change our hotel the day after

Nice looking old historic hotel.

Hotel has no functioning bar. Location is good .Staff are reserved, not very outgoing and warm.Otherwise the hotel is attractive.

Hotel location was great. Staff was very helpful and knew English. Problem was it was 80 degrees outside and they won't put on the air conditioning. AC use in April is a no-no. The windows opened only about 10 inches. The bed mattress was very firm. That was okay with me but my daughter thought the mattress was very uncomfortable.

Donghu Garden Hotel Shanghai

Marvellous large balcony room, with double glazing. Well situated in French Concession with variety of eating places available in neigbourhood and euwrpoean breakfast available cheaply across road. Only difficulty was willingness or ability of staff to assist in booking tours around/outside Shangahi. No obvious tourist brochures - achieved this by going to Howard Johnson close by and being assisted by concierge

Great Location and Old Colonial Charm

We stayed here for 5 nights and couldn't have been happier with our choice. It was one of the least expensive of the 4 star and above standard in the French Concession and one of the rare ones that included free internet (ethernet cable provided). The location is excellent with all restaurants bars and shops on the doorstep. The staff are helpful when asked but don't harrass and hover around like in some others I've been to recently. We stayed in the old part of the hotel which I would recommend if possible as the rooms are beautiful (by shanghai standards). The rooms are quite small but have a lot of storage.

A great stay at the Donghu Hotel

We stayed in a deluxe room in building # 1. Lovely large room with 2 double beds. Great value for money. Good mini fridge and easy to order ice. Great service from hotel and incredibly helpful staff in relation to taxis and transport. Would recommend fabulous cafe across the road, Wagas, for breakfast. The hotel breakfast buffet is average. Convenient HSBC ATM at end of the street. Hotel was in a great location for metro. Would highly recommend the Donghu Garden Hotel Shanghai. We travelled in March and it was cold - you need warm gloves and coat.

Fantastic Hotel with interesting architecture.

The amenities in our room were amazing. Tea, coffee, coffee machine (never had that before) bathroom supplies were incredible. Our room was huge by hotel standards. We were in the "old/original" building which is very impressive. Reception staff can speak reasonable English and if we were using a taxi - wrote the destination in Mandarin for us as the taxi drivers don't speak English at all. Plenty of places to eat within walking distance. Highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

Since this hotel is very conveniently located, one can do a lot around the vicinity... Shooping - you have small, cute, boutique shops where one can get everything possible, from clothes, to accessories, shoes, bags etc etc. Even the malls with big brands are all walking distance. Food - you get everything possible within 5 mins walking distance. Sichuan citizen, coffee beans, local street food etc etc. Leisure - One can indulge in the massages, spas etc, which are hop, skip n jump away from the hotel.

Shanghai Surprise- excelent location & price

We chose the Donghu Hotel for its location and price - which was perfect. Not only are there wonderful places to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner on the same block but it is a great staring point for walking around town. We were in building number one, it has a circle driveway and front garden(they have several buildings). The 4th floor room was very large with high ceilings, bright and sunny. The in-room safe was large enough for our 15" laptops. The only negative thing was the bathroom was outdated.It was clean and roomy but outdated.The staff was very friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend this hotel to our friends. p.s.The photos don't do the place justice.

Hotel Donghu, Shanghai - French Concession

Very good location, as most of our business was in French Concession area. Also much quieter than around People's Square and Bund areas. Building One (where we were staying) was very good - old style. Swimming Pool in Building 7 clean but changing rooms a bit shabby. Swimming cap required, which, eventually they lent me free of charge as I didn't have any money on me.
