Upon arrival at the Hilton at YYZ and being assigned a room, I found myself not merely disappointed but affronted — by the shoddy standard of the room with broken and damaged fixtures especially in the washroom, the complacent rudeness of the staff, and a management willing to excuse incompetence with the air of entitlement. The desk agent who greeted me was crass and condescending — wholly unprofessional — and when I asked a simple, binary question — “Will you change the room?” — I was given obstinate refusal. When I asked, “Will you clean and fix the room?” my concerns were waved away as though I had inconvenienced an establishment already exhausted by largesse. Most egregiously: I am a person with a visible physical disability. When I requested assistance at check-in I was refused. At check-out I telephoned the desk and waited forty-four minutes for help that never came, despite two further requests. This is not merely bad hospitality; it is a failure to fulfil accessibility obligations.
