Was what you expected, I hoped for a little more in the room, but was just a place to sleep for a few hours until I woke up to go to the airport. Staff were friendly, shared kitchen and bathroom was run down, and my curtain/window from my room opened to a view of them both, not outside. Did have one fella stick his arm through at one point when walking the hallway, which wasn’t amazing but no big deal to just close it. Airport shuttle was the best thing, ran regularly and 24 hours, made the trip to the place and then back to the airport early hours of the morning stress free.

I was upgraded to a room with its own bathroom however it was in terrible condition. The room smelt strongly of mildew, which was mainly coming from the carpet. There were large patches of mould on the ceiling in the bedroom and one corner of the room had visible streaks of water staining the paint. The bathroom 'vent' which was just a pipe to the roof, was also caked in mould as one of the lights. The 'vent' didn't do anything so the bathroom just stayed full of steam, hence the mould. The toilet was installed on an angle so when you sit on it you have to brace yourself to stay on because the lean was quite significant. The floor around the toilet was spongey and had patches that felt like they were missing a layer of flooring underneath. The bathroom looks to be built for wheelchair accessibility however it is far from being accessible. The shower seat did not seem sturdy and you couldn't reach the mixer from it or the shower head from it and I am by no means short. I only mention this as I worry the room will be marketed as accessible when it isn't, as I was upgraded to it I am not sure if they consider it accessible or not. Once running, the shower constantly switches between tepid and scolding hot and changing the mixer does nothing to help this. There were cobwebs throughout the room and when I checked under the bed for a coin I dropped, it was absolutely filthy, it's not been vacuumed under there in weeks. Also the lock on the door was very loose with screws missing.

After a long haul journey and arriving from overseas at 2am, we were grateful for the free airport shuttle bus and 24 hour check in at Airport Gateway Hotel. The staff were very kind and accommodating and we were able to arrange for a late check out, the night before, due to our jet lag.They kindly gave us extra coffee and milk, upon request. It was nice to be able to get filtered, chilled or bottled water at reception from the dispenser and reception. We enjoyed our stay and will come back.

If you’re reading this DO NOT BOOK. This was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had, and I honestly believe this property should be removed from Expedia’s listings. I find the rating here on Expedia much too high, almost every other source rates this hotel at around 2.3 stars, which I still believe to be generous. The first room I was given was filthy, carpets sticky, cobwebs, extremely musty-smelling (suggesting possible mold), and had bedbugs — I have photos and videos as proof. The main door to the hotel was secure but the side doors were wide open. I then walked to their front desk at 4am, which is located in the nearby gateway hotel. When I reported the filthy bug ridden room, staff promised me a better room and moved me next door to their Gateway Hotel, but that room was also dirty and poorly maintained. I opted to sit on the pleather desk chair until I booked a stay somewhere else. Around 8am I asked the manager for a refund and showed her my video evidence, she refused unless an inspector confirmed the bugs. She mentioned the inspector comes every 3 weeks. I was left with no choice but to cut my stay short, leave the property, and pay out-of-pocket for another hotel and a wash for all my clothes. This hotel is unsafe, unsanitary, and mismanaged. It should not be advertised on Expedia as a viable accommodation option.

My bathroom ceiling was covered in mold. The pillow cases on one of the beds were filthy. The rooms all smelt damp, fusty and mouldy. The reception area for the hotel is actually next door in a neighbouring hotel which was inconvenient. The guy on reception was pleasant and helpful but when I told him I couldn’t stay in that room he didn’t immediately express any concern regarding the state of my room and did not ask to come and inspect the room. He took me back over to the hotel and showed me 3 other rooms I could choose from and only one of those was free of mould. This is definately the worst accomodation I have stayed at in NZ. The pictures look nice enough but the place is completely run down and disgusting.
