Great Visit to Bailey Island

Good location, near a small beach good for little ones, a couple restaurants, and a kayak rental spot just north of the bridge (which has a sidewalk). Helpful and responsive host, Brett. He immediately and pleasantly attended to a couple of house problems noted the first and second day of our stay. The four upstairs bedrooms were air-conditioned, adequately-sized and had en-suite bathrooms. We didn't use the fold out couch on the first floor or twin trundle beds in the garden level game and media room. The kitchen is more than adequately stocked with dishes, pots and pans, etc. and pantry staples. Also plenty of paper products for kitchen and bathrooms. The dining area/family room and kitchen are in a nice open plan, great for gathering. There are books galore in most of the rooms. The wrap-around deck is great, with a large picnic-style table, grill, and multiple outdoor seats and benches. (The cushions could use a cleaning, as they were a little green in places).Parking near the house and exiting the driveway are a bit challenging, as mentioned in other reviews. Our visit was over the July 4th week, and the view from the roof deck of fireworks up and down the coast was spectacular. A real memory-maker.

Great location and great house for large groups

Spacious floorplan that includes en suite bathrooms for each bedroom was perfect for our group of seven. Bailey Island is unquestionably a lovely location and I highly recommend it. My only critique is that the kitchen, which is large and great for people who like to cook, could use a thorough detailing. The dishwasher didn't work properly and the soap cover was broken. The oven runs cooler than the thermostat. Some of the older supplies could be tossed. Finally, the rooftop patio was not accessible during our stay due to previous storm damage. I think it would have been a wonderful feature, but it did not impair our family time together. All that said, the house was charming, comfortable, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time. One last thing. The hot water heater had a small problem while we were there. Brett was very responsive and solved the problem without delay. Our communication with him was excellent. Just trying to give a comprehensive and honest review. I would definitely stay here again.

First renters of season 2025

Our stay was disappointing. We arrived in the middle of the night, and went straight to bed- the check-in was very easy. When we woke up in the morning there was no hot water. While our host did respond quickly and said he’d be over within the hour, it took him almost four hours to actually come over and fix the issue with the water heater. He was not apologetic and seemed annoyed.Later in the week the water stopped altogether- suddenly when we turned on the sinks there was no water at all. Luckily it resolved within a half an hour. When contacted he stated I need to make sure to flip up all toilet handles or ‘you’ll drain the well.’ We were careful to do this and it was not the issue. The house was dirty. There are many positive reviews so our experience was unexpected and disappointing. He mentioned we were the first renters of the season- he clearly did not clean or prepare anything. The faucet on the sink in the kitchen was very loose and hard to do dishes as it was bent forward and moved around every time we used it.Most of the utensils and pots/pans were sticky and needed to be washed before using. The sheets smelled and needed to be washed. The trash area was overflowing with garbage. The pictures make the home look it is on the water/ it is not. They are outdated and there are trees blocking the view now. It is on a busy main road. The rooftop deck was empty without a bar or seating as advertised. The roof leaked and got my clothes wetDo not recommend.

Comfortable

Great house very comfortable and well appointed. Very roomy for our entire family. Nice to have en suite bathrooms with all the bedrooms. The host was very good with communication. Located on a busy road and the driveway is on a curve which made it a little challenging entering and exiting the property.

Great family gathering spot

This lovely home on Bailey Island served as a wonderful locale for our family gathering. Spacious deck with outdoor dining area, as well as several common areas inside. The upper deck was an added plus with day and evening views across the harbor. Upstairs bedrooms were comfortable and private. The main floor study/library’s sleep sofa may work for someone of a younger age,but was not comfortable for our guest. Several minor issues need attention, which the owner indicated would be worked on the following week. Both the owner and his personable assistant were very responsive during our stay. Parking and egress were a bit of a challenge, but one we adjusted to, and a backup parking area was available to us if we had needed it. The home has a very interesting family history, which adds to its charm. I could have easily stayed another week just to enjoy the views, the books, and art and historical items on the walls, etc.

A Great Property for Vacation

Our entire group of seven was delighted with the house and location! We cooked most evenings and loved having dinner every night on the expansive porch with beautiful views. The interior is spacious and comfortable with a very well equipped kitchen. The driveway is a little tricky but definitely manageable with the windows down to hear vehicles approaching when you're pulling out. We would absolutely rent again. Thank you Brett and Family for a lovely week with many happy memories!

A beautiful family getaway!

What an outstanding host and property. We vacation as a family every year, all over the east coast, and this home rates at the top. The bedrooms each had a bathroom-the kitchen was equipped for a chef-the outdoor areas were so beautiful (including awakening each day to the birds!)-and the home was decorated to make you feel at home. The host has a wonderful home and we’re so welcoming. Thank you!

July on Bailey Island

My family had a great time in this beautiful house. The kitchen was amazingly stocked with everything you could need as a chef. The setup on the deck was perfect for cooking lobsters and having an outdoor dinner. Each bedroom had its own air conditioning which was wonderful for each guest. The kids were so excited about watching the fireworks on the rooftop deck which did not disappoint!! The house is in walking distance to some local restaurants and strolls on the cribstone bridge. Lovely stay on Bailey Island.

Well-Appointed

Wonderful home with terrific views in a great location! As previous reviewers have noted, the kitchen has everything (and more!) one needs for cooking and entertaining while on vacation. We cooked most nights, including a couple nights of fresh lobster from the cove less than a mile away. Out of the water and I to the pot in less than an hour! Fresh, tasty, delicious! The deck is wonderful and our dog loved sitting out there and watching nature. The beds were comfortable, and there are cabinets full of dvds and puzzles and games. On two rainy days, it wasn’t a problem to stay indoors. It was a pleasure to kick back and relax! The owner, Brett, was very responsive when the WiFi went down one day or when we planned to cook 100 lbs of lobster and asked about an outdoor heating element. He came and set it up right away. Btw, in the cabinet is everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, one needs for preparing and eating lobster. Brett is also a wealth of k owl edge for local anything. Also, don’t forget to visit his storefront - Main Street Design Co - in nearby Bath. Very special and quality home interior goods.

Best gathering spot

This house is simply beautiful. All the fun nautical decor and tasteful furnishings were enjoyed by everyone. Everyone had their own space yet, there were many areas to allow a large group to gather. The long outdoor table was full every night for dinner. Close to the beach and scenic hikes. Perfect for our grandchildren to enjoy each other in the large playroom downstairs. Awesome vacation, thank you!

Great getaway!

Loved the house! Plenty of bedrooms and multiple living areas for all ages. Our 4 year old grandson loved the toys and games. The kitchen had everything we could ask for and more. The only downside was the location on the main road onto Bailey Island. We were hesitant to go for walks from there (we did see others doing it) but could easily drive to find hiking areas and beaches. Our family really enjoyed the trip!

A-Maine-ziing!

Just as the description states, this house and views are amazing, as our niece stated, it was A-Maine-zing! Our family is from Bath and had always wanted to be back in the area for the 4th of July and this house was the perfect spot for our party of 7 to re-visit old memories and make fantastic new ones. The house is not very old, has all modern amenities, but has the feel of "old Maine" which is exactly what we were looking for. Thank you Brett and family for sharing your beautiful home on VRBO.

Great place for family reunion

We were celebrating my parent's 70th wedding anniversary. Each bedroom had its own bathroom with luxurious towels and plenty of privacy. Kitchen was magnificently stocked, including wonderful welcome goodies. I appreciated outdoor grill setup for cooking lobsters and clams without having the smell linger in the house. Views from the upper deck were great. We had so much fun on the main floor together that we never really got to use the video system in the basement. I would definitely rent this property again.

A dream stay on Bailey Island

8 parents/grandparents and 5 children age 7 and below spent a grand 7 days at the Capt. Lawrence Johnson house. Owned by Capt. Johnson’s grandchildren, this iconic house of a historic fixture of Bailey Island lobstering made a perfect harbor for “cousin chaos” with lots of happy children and plenty of space for many moms and dads. Private space, very quiet, close to the Cribstone Bridge and a short drive to all the local sights. It was ideal for a large family that likes to cook. A perfect movie room for kids. Lots of baths for us all. And a porch view of stunning sunsets that made the stay all the more perfect.

Relaxing vacation stay

This property is well furnished with everything you need to have a relaxing, enjoyable and fun vacation. The well-appointed kitchen was a wonderful plus for making meals for a large crowd. The only drawback was that the house is positioned on a highly trafficked road, making noise an issue when sitting on the deck. Otherwise, we were extremely pleased with the setting. The island itself has fun activities to do and it isn’t very far from grocery stores and other amenities.

Beautiful Bailey Island

The property is perfect for a large group who like a chef's kitchen. It had all the pots, pans, utensils, plates, silverware, condiments, storage containers, trash bags, soaps, etc. that you could want. We had lobster boils twice, and the outside burners and lobster pots were great, as was the 6 burner gas range. For 9 of us though, one fridge was not enough! But the house is large, charming and comfortable. Everyone liked having their own bathroom/bedroom combo and the A/C in the bedrooms was great. It really is a must, with heat waves becoming the norm. I don't think it would take much to add a couple of units to the main floor and the basement. They were hot, even with opening windows & running fans at night to pull in cooler air. Now, for the downsides. The weeds & weed-trees have grown up to where the views are limited. I had to hack away some branches along the staircase up from the driveway to use the safety railing. Being close to the road means road noise. And the cleanliness could have been better. Upon arrival, I found the windows and glass doors on the main floor covered with kids' handprints. There were spiderwebs everywhere; the fridge drawers and coffee pot hadn't been cleaned; and there was lots of cooking splatter on the framed pictures that served as a backsplash and walls around the sink and trash areas. (This is why I brought a container of clorox wipes - I'm super-picky that way, so it was cleaner when we left!) The bedspreads, decorative pillows, & slipcovered furniture need to be laundered. The sheets & towels, floors, and bathrooms were all spotless however. (Those Cuddledown sheets are on my Christmas list!) Oh, and none of the doors in the place want to latch, unless you lock them from inside. Most people probably wouldn't notice these things, or wouldn't care - just know your own cleanliness preferences and act accordingly. To be fair, it is a dog-friendly unit and there was only one cleaning lady; she would need a team of 3 to get a place that big cleaned every week! But those things really felt minor by the 2nd day - the place oozes charm and we had a great time. It had everything you could want for a great vacation. Movies, puzzles and games for rainy days; even laundry detergent. And Bailey Island is a gem. Cooks and Sundrenched restaurants are delicious and walkable. Kayak rentals, lobster boat charters, and a couple of beaches for the kids made for a memorable vacation. We will definitely be back.
