Bruinisse, Bru, is the seaside village of Schouwen-Duiveland. You will see this as soon as you see the huge shell statue that stands at the harbor overlooking the fishing boats.



With a reputation as a fishing and farming community, Bru has long had mussels as its main source of income.

The mussel season begins in July with three-day fish festivals where the whole village celebrates and eats the mussel.



The intertwined history of Bruinisse and mussels comes alive at the Visserijmuseum Brusea in Oudestraat. The listed building next door, the Oudheidkamer, was furnished as an 18th-century fisherman's house.



Nowadays, Bruinisse has become a popular vacation destination thanks to its location on the Grevelingenmeer and attracts more and more water sports enthusiasts.



Here lies Europe's largest freshwater lake (and sailing area), which has its own unique fauna and flora.
