This is a place for people looking for a Japanese Ryokan experience. You sleep on a thin futon on a tatami mat floor, and the room is pretty spartan. That said, the staff is very helpful and kind and while the place could use some updating (especially the door & lock to the rooms and the number and location of plugs), this was a very pleasant stay.
It was so nice to only have to walk across the street from Kyoto Station to get to the ryokan hotel. Enjoyed the traditional hot springs baths and the free hot drinks vending machine in the lobby. Rooms were dated but clean and cosy. Staff were attentive and friendly. I'm not a fan of sleeping on futons, but my family loved it. Perfect spot for people to explore Kyoto all day, and have a hot soak in the traditional (naked) hot springs at night. Would stay there again, as it was quite affortable.
Staff was very helpful. This is a traditional Japanese hotel so read carefully. Bathroom in my room was good enough although a bit budget. Not sure what the basement bath facilities were about but it didn’t matter Slept fairly well. Wanted to see what a ryokan was about. Mission accomplished
We stayed in a Japanese style room, situated on the train station side. The room was comfortably sized for two, but not a lot of luggage space. Thankfully there were extra futon mattresses in the cupboard as the single layer was a bit thin.
The staff were all very polite and willing to help - communications were a bit halting but we got by with our decent (if rudimentary) amount of Japanese. Breakfast was well worth it, and the communal baths were very restorative (if not as hot as we expected).
There was significant general noise from the street (people being loud, traffic). We were unfortunate enough to have roadworks directly under our window for two nights (no fault of the property, just a terrible coincidence). No noise issues within the property.
We were so close to transport, dining and shopping yet we felt like we were a world away in a traditional ryokan with beautiful breakfasts and futon bedding with rice paper walls blocking out the cold and street traffic noise. Front desk assistance was kind, friendly and helpful. The onsen experience was very clean and relaxing.
the location was great and the stuff very nice but the rules are too difficult so the check in at 4pm and the check out 10 am so they deduct 6 hours its the longest period I ever seen and also you can't keep your luggage after 3 pm otherwise they will charge per piece.
Right outside Kyoto station so super convenient. Traditional ryokan very well maintained. Breakfast was great too. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Will come back again.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Disliked: Room comfort
Cosy & tidy
The room was much smaller than we had anticipated. But it was tidy & clean & conveniently located opposite the station & food establishments.
Traditional Interior, Modern Building, Central Loc
Clean, conveniently located ryokan in a modern building across the street from Kyoto station whose interior nonetheless feels like an old-style building due to the way the rooms are constructed with traditional materials. The breakfast was great, the public baths were nice, and while it doesn't quite have the character of a genuine historical ryokan, it has a lot more than any other modern-built ones I've seen, as well all the advantages of a modern building.
I would recommend Matsumoto Ryokan to anyone wanting a traditional-style stay with modern convenience in a transit-connected location.
Enjoyed my one night stay. Location is great, near the train station, which also has many shopping and dining options. It is not a non-smoking establishment so I was worried that the room would smell of cigarette smoke, but I was pleasantly surprised to not detect this at all. Stayed in a traditional Japanese style room but the hotel also offers western bed style rooms. The futon was not very comfortable to sleep on, though I understand that most hotel mattresses in Japan are not, by western standards. Be aware that the hotel charges a fee if you want them to hold your luggage past 3 pm after checking out.
