Beautiful hostel overlooking the park and lake. Friendly staff allowed me to check in early as my bed was ready and even asked if I wanted a top or bottom bunk which was much appreciated. The kitchen was spacious and the rooms and bathroom were very clean. The 4 bed female dorm felt a bit cramped at times but the bed setup is well thought out with privacy curtains, generous underbed storage and an additional smaller locker, both of which can be padlocked. Highly recommend this hostel!
We used the single room, not sharing. It was clean and had everything we needed. I wish it was a little bigger for our luggage, we had to open them on the floor and walk over them, but not a big deal.
I think the property and the staff are ok overall. What I did not like is the state of cleanliness of the sheets and pillowcases. I would like to send a picture of the pillowcases, they were full of stains
There were bugs jumping around in the bed and surrounding area of the top bunk. I approached staff for support including the manager and they were really unhelpful and quite un empathetic. I appreciate they were fully booked and I couldn’t change rooms, however they made me feel like it was my problem. The staff said she needed to check and when returned said there were no bugs , I advised I had video footage. I recognised I wasn’t going to get anywhere so left it. I asked if I could check out the next morning and the manager said ‘you can just give me the card’ which was disappointing. My other experiences of Haka house have been much more positive especially in Wanaka.
Best Haka House in New Zealand. Big clean bathroom facilities, great location on the lake, nice private bunks. 10/10 recommend.

Not quite what we expected
It was hard to find accommodations in Lake Tekapo even though we booked several months in advance.
It was our fault that we didn’t read the description carefully. We booked a king room with bathroom. It wasn’t cheap but certainly looked it. Peeling paint. Grubby walls, cheap industrial carpet. Frosted window that only opened a few inches, probably because we were next to an alley with trash cans. That, the restaurant next door decided to utilize around 11.00pm to empty what sounded like several dozen glass bottles. Thankfully we only stayed one night. It really is a backpackers paradise.
Had an amazing time at Haka Tekapo, super clean, organized and welcoming.
I already traveled in NZ 3 months, at the end of the traveling, I really appreciated what you did for us. Early check in, beautiful kitchen and lovely staff.
It’s hard to leave and already miss you guys.
Wish to be there again
