My review is based on Expedia listing HGV Elara as a 4 star place. I learned while on the trip that Google (maps) has it listed as 3 star. Just a heads up. First, I was expecting a timeshare push. As soon as we got there, they asked if we wanted to sit for the presentation, we said no, and that was that. Pleasantly surprised. Except, it didn't end there. If you want to walk out to the strip, you have to go through their mall and HGV folks are at every exit waiting to pester you. Every time. Multiple times a day. Be prepared for that. This isn't the worst part. The worst part was the condition of the room. It looked like a hastily and poorly refurbished roadside motel. And it was filthy. Mind you, we had a corner suite and attached extra room. There was bacteria in the grout on the sink and in the shower. The fixtures were a mix of chrome, brushed nickel (?), and brushed brass. Tiles, wall paper, and cabinets didn't really match. The in room hot tub looked old and also didn't match the rest of the room. One of the shower lights was out the entire time that we were there. There were stains on the walls in the main area. The safe never worked. I raised this and the bathroom issues and they were never addressed. They basically asked what they should do about it. Despite being on the 20th floor, we could hear everything from the street. Not what I'd expect from a 4 star place.

It would have been handy having clear instructions on where to go and where to park when going as the car park is shared by planet Hollywood the hotel and the mall. After a couple of days you get your bearings but it is all initially confusing. It took ages sorting our room due to issues with the dishwasher but staff were helpful and gave access to pool area and some drinks. Fab view from the room but for such a class of hotel the tv setup could be really improved. The WiFi was sketchy and getting chrome cast to work required a sacrifice to the gods. We gave up. At the Hilton in Bakersfield they had it so much better with Netflix and Disney apps pre loaded and a system to allow you sign in then easily sign out when you leave the hotel. Nothing like that here. There was a lot of loose screws, a toaster that only did one side of the bread and weirdly the breakfast bar had posts underneath that did no supporting of the top and were not evenly in place and crooked. That all said the location and experience was still fab.
