## Neighborhood
Vaise is somewhat the capital of the 9th arrondissement of Lyon. A neighborhood that has been developing for a decade. It is increasingly popular and a great place to live.
Vaise, a cultural hub
We are lucky to have a Gaumont Pathé Cinema, a media library that many envy, offering a rich program year-round for both kids and adults, the Nouvelle Génération Theater, as well as neighborhood theaters and concert halls with eclectic programming accessible to all, like Acte 2 Theater or Hameçon.
Sports in Vaise
For sports enthusiasts, living in Vaise means having access to many sports clubs and two major facilities:
The Sport dans la Ville campus, the main association for sports integration in France, offers 6 synthetic football fields, an outdoor basketball court (covered under a hall), a running track, and a fitness room. The Municipal Swimming Pool, open both in summer and winter, features a 50m pool, diving boards (1m, 3m, and 5m), and a paddling pool. You only need to wear your duck floatie.
All roads lead to Vaise
Yes, Vaise is accessible from all sides! By foot via the newly renovated Saône quays, by bike through the soft mobility tunnel, by metro via Valmy and Place de Paris, by train from the Vaise train station, by car via the new Schuman Bridge, TEO, or the Fourvière and Croix Rousse tunnels. In addition to easy transportation, Vaise is only a few minutes from downtown (7 minutes exactly by metro from Vaise Station to Bellecour) and a few minutes from the countryside of western Lyon. A central point that hasn't escaped our attention given the heavy traffic during peak hours... Vaise is getting greener
The development of green spaces in recent years has truly revitalized our neighborhood. Today, there are no fewer than 5 large parks with all the essentials for a picnic: grass, trees: Roquette Park, Michèle Mollard Park, Montel Park, the Saules Garden (with ping-pong tables available to the public), and the new Vallon Park, which, though in Duchère, starts at the gates of Vaise. But for picnics, we'll have to wait a few more months… The landscape is changing
Vaise is also experiencing the rebirth of two new urban areas and the creation of a new thoroughfare.
Industrial area: the establishment of companies, development of leisure and restaurant zones, the development of public spaces, and the delivery of 650 new homes with shops planned for 2015.
Greenopolis, which once housed an electric bulb manufacturing company (where I dreamed of working as a child… yes, we have wild ambitions when we're kids!) will soon host 10 buildings housing companies and shops, 2,500m² of green spaces, and 650 expected jobs. This is what we call making new from old!
The Rue du 24 mars 1852, inaugurated in 2010, has completed its development. This street has linked the two Joannès: Joannès Carret Street (Industrial Area) and Joannès Masset Street (Gorge de Loup). It thus offers an alternative route for moving around Vaise and helps ease traffic. Numerous homes have been built along this street, and the first residents have recently moved into the new buildings replacing the former Prisunic and McDonald's.
By the way, do you know the story behind this street name? I’ll share it with you so you can casually mention it tonight, during dinner, between the pear and the cheese:
The decree of March 24, 1852, created five districts in Lyon: this is when Vaise was attached to Lyon as the 5th district.
Fun shops in Vaise
The Vaise merchants' association is very active for our neighborhood. After the Vaisetival this summer, we had the Advent Calendar during the holiday season. Many shops are gradually opening their doors with the desire to bring fresh air to the area, creating something unique, offering new things, and uniting Vaise residents around the neighborhood life. However, our merchants are also fragile, as the economy isn't doing well, and it's sometimes tough to survive. But they are motivated and creative! Don't hesitate to shop in your neighborhood, as prices are often no higher than in large stores, the advice is much more personalized, and we’re lucky to have very friendly shopkeepers! So let’s all shop in Vaise to help the economy grow and our neighborhood flourish.
Vaise and its Gones
More than ten schools, middle schools, and high schools are located in the Vaise neighborhood and its surroundings. Among them, a brand new school group opened in 2014 in the Docks area: the Antonin Laborde School Group. This school is part of the redevelopment of the Industrial area. For younger children, there are no fewer than 7 crèches and a large number of daycare providers whose contact details are available at the Baby Loup daycare center at 53 bis, Rue Sergent Michel Berthet and Baby 9 at 5 Rue Mazaryk. To keep our little ones busy during school vacations, we can count on the Pierrette Augier Social and Cultural Center or the Mare à Toto. In short, Vaise is all about youth!
Eating in Vaise
In recent times, the old bars and bistros in Vaise have been replaced by new restaurants. Whether they are traditional bistros, market-driven, inventive, gastronomic, seafood specialties, or even world cuisines, we now have a wide range of options at prices that can suit everyone.
Markets
What’s the symbol of a village? Its markets. In Vaise, there are no fewer than 5 weekly markets:
Tuesday mornings: Organic market at Place Valmy
Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings: at Place de Paris
Friday from 3 PM to 7:30 PM: evening food market at Ilot Louis Loucheur
