The staff were amazing, on reception, at breakfast, the ladies who cleaned the rooms, security, bar staff, cooks even the people who did Maintainance, special thanks to Sid, who was concerned about our safety when we went to carnival at night, and always checked in with us to see we were ok. Can’t recommend, this hotel highly enough. The breakfasts are amazing and so are the caipirinha!
This is a brilliant find. For the price we paid it’s a bargain of a hotel. Safe to walk about the streets and the tram runs along the top of the street which is about a 6 min walk from the hotel. Brilliant quirky hotel With great breakfast and funky rooms, amazing bar, pool table and outside space. No pool but we only stayed 1 night so it didn’t bother us.

Great hub to explore Rio.
We loved our stay. Great suburb - good bars & food nearby. Breakfast was great. Rooms all clean and tidy. No pool/gym etc but not needed if you’re exploring Rio.
This hotel was amazing, perfectly located and very well decorated. I have nothing negative to mention for the room they gave us.
The restaurant is good but the service is awful. Please improve that, it was really frustrating.
This is a really cool accommodation. Super quirky, the design features are great. It’s located right in the heart of the very trendy Santa Teresa. My friend and I, two female travellers felt safe walking around in the area where it’s situated. There is 24 hour security on the door too.
Breakfast was good and regularly replenished and we had the pizza here for dinner one evening too which was really tasty and I’d highly recommend.
The only downfalls we found about this hotel is the lack of lighting in the room which made getting ready in the evening quite a challenge. The room lighting is extremely dim. The only other thing was the absence of a room fridge which we’d had everywhere else we’d stayed in Rio but it was just a minor thing that would’ve been nice to have. Other than that, We had a great stay and the staff were all so lovely and helpful!
Mama Shelter is located in an old, colonial part of Rio de Janeiro on a hill I'd guess 500 ft. above the city. The views are spectacular on the 007 bus heading downtown on winding roads from the Largo de Guimaraes (community business center). Breakfast is complimentary and offers a broad array of hot and cold selections. Front desk staff were happy to answer my travel questions in English although I always spoke a few words in Portuguese. Access to the metro requires a long hike or a bus or taxi ride down the hill to Gloria or one of the other downtown metro stations. Santa Teresa (the colonial community where Mama Shelter is located) offers a lot to interest a traveler in itself. Downtown, of course, offers even more. The famous southern beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon are located about eight subway stops south of Gloria. I did not ask the hotel to provide transportation to/from the international airport although I understand they will. My stay at the Mama Shelter was a pleasant one. Mama took care of me.
We booked a large room with a view but were given a small double without a view. Quite disappointing. The guy that checked us in told us that the hotel charges the same for any room but that hotels website sells them differently without notifying the hotel directly.
Nice hotel with cool trendy feel. Food was good relative to general standard in Rio. Location was fine but a liitle difficult to walk to nearest metro station and tourist sites.
Mama shelter is a great place to relax with a big cozy fun bed, power shower, or hammock. We were in Rio to explore. It feels that the intent of the hotel’s artsy vibe is to provide a point of immersion in the hill-neighborhood architecture of Santa Teresa. We walked up to the hip coffee shops & had vegan pizza & açai. Drive further up the hill into the Atlantic Forest & see Jesus on Corcovado. The beaches of Rio are below. The staff communicated joyously with some English.
This is my kind of place.
Colorful and clean room with modern amenities. Staff also spoke English & Spanish. Neighborhood was eclectic and vibrant at day, but not the type of place you’d want to walk around alone at night.
One suggestion for improvement: staff could have made it more clear that a R$35 serve-yourself breakfast was available in the restaurant each morning. We weren’t aware.
One other comment that is worth mentioning, but no fault of the hotel- sometimes it was hard to get an Uber driver to agree to come all the way up the hill to Santa Theresa, so we had to rely on nearby taxis.
