Good if you don't need customer service

The place is great, amazing view, but the customer service leaves a lot to be desired...The information on their documents say breakfast until 10:30am, but people at the restaurant say 10am, so if you were trusting the information provided in paper, too bad for you. Also they say 10, but they start picking up stuff at 9:30 so if you wanted coffee with sugar, not going to happen, or wanted napkins, it's a no too. Options at the buffet gets reduced at 9:30 too. And people at the reception can't be bother to answer questions for the guests right in front of them. Basically if you can stay without needing customer service or the angora restaurant it will be a great place to choose

Overall we enjoyed our stay at Barcelo. We were a bit disappointed about a few things: there was no microwave in the room, although there was a fridge. Also there was not much to do at the hotel entertainment- we were looking forward to relaxing in the jacuzzi, which turned out to not be relaxing at all: it was in the middle of the gym and did not have bubbles or anything. We enjoyed the breakfast being included, which had a decent amount of options. We liked the pina coladas at the hotel also. Overall the food was kind of bland at all of the hotel restaurants, but not bad (do not order guacamole). The desk staff were very nice and helpful, and the staff in the gift shop were extremely friendly also. Luis, one of the buffet restaurant employees, was our server on our first day at the hotel and was incredible- he was so friendly and welcoming. We had only one negative interaction during our stay with an employee at the pool bar. Housekeeping was very nice also and came frequently. The hotel was very clean overall. One more thing we liked was the free airport shuttle, which you can schedule via email. Would recommend to someone visiting Costa Rica on a budget. Thank you to all of the Barcelo staff for welcoming us!

1 complaint is the awful shuttle experience I had upon arrival. Was reserved on 2:30pm shuttle from SJO, but spent over 2 hrs & numerous unanswered calls to front desk, I was repeatedly told only via email the driver is "15 minutes away". This went on every 15 minutes for 2+ hrs! I didn't leave the designated pick-up area to avoid missing it the shuttle. I literally stood outside the airport (no seats for waiting), w/out a bathroom break, water, w/out applying my bug spray (very much needed during rainy season when mosquitoes are bad), & w/out air conditioning. I was tired, frustrated, & received false information for over 2 full hours from front desk staff that refused to answer my calls or call me back, but would only email me instead. I would've caught an Uber/Taxi, but was being consistently told that the driver was only 15 mins. I was told to wait under the Hotel Shuttle sign or the driver would leave & that he was in a gray/silver minivan. Over 2 hrs later, at 4:38pm, driver arrived in a dark navy BLUE van, & stopped at the airport exit doors, NOT at the Hotel Shuttle sign over 200 feet away. The advertised "20 min ride" to Barcelo was actually an HOUR & a half! Staff claimed no control of traffic, but my point was they live there, know daily traffic patterns & rush hours, they said it's normally heavy, so don't falsely say it's 20 mins. as if that is normal. Don't threaten $30 penalty for passengers missing the van, when no credit given to passengers that wait 2 hrs!
