- Arrive by 8 a.m. to avoid entrance gate lines and make the most of early hours
- Tour takes 8–10 hours; can be spread over 2–3 days if preferred
- Hermit Road is shuttle-only March–November (Red Route); Yaki Point is always shuttle-only (Orange Route) — bring headphones, the tour works on shuttles
- Parking fills up fast — arrive early or use the shuttle from wherever you park
- Cell service is limited — download the tour offline before your visit
- Trails may be icy even in spring — pack layers and consider crampons
- Overnight stays and camping require a backcountry permit; Phantom Ranch books out months in advance
