Property could use a spruce up and deep clean but staff excellent very helpful gave lots of tips on where to go where to eat how to get around
We arrived at 10 PM. The neighborhood seems somebody sketchy at at that time of the day. The inside locked run down, a little bit like European youth hostel in the 80s. Nobody was at the reception. An off duty, employee walked by and told me I should just wait. “There was some safety thing going on” outside. I was waiting fully 10 minutes and then decided to leave and find a different hotel. This was a really unsettling experience for me and my daughter.
We loved the Mark Spencer and will definitely stay here again on future trips to Portland. The location was perfect...walkable to everything we wanted to do and so many great restaurants, cafes, and shops around. Our room was wonderful and it was an overall exceptional experience!
Beautiful old hotel, well kept up. Extraordinarily friendly and responsive staff. Large rooms, well appointed. They serve wine and snacks in the lobby at 5, gratis, and have excellent coffee available 24/7 (in the lobby, not in the rooms). You have to go down to the basement to get ice; other than that, I can't think of anything remotely bad to say. It's a block from Powell's Bookstore and surrounded by restaurants and bars. I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else in Portland since I discovered this hotel.
Overall this was a good stay - a perfect walking location to a concert with my kids, close to Powell’s Bookstore, and the little kitchenette was great! It was also quieter than I anticipated of a downtown hotel. The staff were also super friendly and helpful. Our room wasn’t as clean as I’d expect of a hotel - there was hair on the floor and door of the bathroom. A prior hotel stay had left the window open and there were some little beetles and a giant wasp hanging out on the curtains by the window. None of these things deterred us from our stay, as they are things that easily clean up and were probably missed by the cleaning crew and the overall cleanliness of the hotel was great! We would stay here again.

We arrived early (due to flight changes) and requested an early check in (and offered to pay for it). The front desk clerk (female) was rude and sternly informed us they were not required to check us in until 4pm. I understand the policy, but when you can accommodate customers faced with travel changes, wouldn’t you try? We sat in the lobby area until 3:50pm at which time our room was ready. We saw four other groups check in early. Certainly a request could have been made to the cleaning staff to clean our room earlier than 3:50pm. Travel is hard these days, and a little flexibility and kindness goes a long way. The room (2 queen executive suite) needs some love - bathroom fan didn’t work, vent in bathroom was filthy. Only one elevator working. Other than the front desk clerk all other employees were very friendly. Overall not impressed and wouldn’t return.

Our room could have used blackout curtains though. The rooms are light colored so the light creeps in around the window shades and fills the room.
