Historical spaces inside the Hotel were fun to investigate and provided an insight into the history of the property and its role in the city of Red Wing. Restaurants onsite were very good. Proximity to AMTRAK makes for an interesting commuting option. Train noises were loud at times. Quirky property overall, mostly in a good way. Overall the rates are a bit pricey. That said we will likely return when we can get a deal.

Beautifully kept and restored historic building built as a hotel overlooking the Mississippi. Fresh flowers at the entrance, in the lobby and dining room. Clean, classy, pleasant and helpful staff. Good restaurant with view of the river. Nicely kept park and walk/ bike path behind the hotel. We went to go biking on the Cannon Valley trail. Staff offered to lick up our bike. Ample, easy access parking garage. Would like to have towel racks or shelf for towels outside the shower space. Would like to have cups in the bathroom. Love the pressed tin ceiling, tasteful wall and window coverings, historic reproduction carpets and all of the historic artifacts documented in the hallways. Like staying in a well kept museum. Memorable and distinctive. Beats the typical hotel experience.

This is a historical hotel on the Mississippi River in Red Wing Minnesota. Staff was very friendly & helpful. Scarlet the restaurant in the hotel has great food, drinks & wonderful staff. We will return in the fall.

We booked - a year in advance - the best class of room: Junior Suite Riverside. The Expedia online photos showed a beautiful view of the river directly out of the window. However, the view from our room couldn't have been more different. Upon entering our room, we were greeted with a view of an industrial warehouse (graffiti included) right across the street. The only way to catch a glimpse the river was to lean way out into the bay window and look far to the right. The receptionist - who was unfriendly before we even checked in - told us that we had the correct room and that there was nothing that could be done. This room was not "Riverside" nor even "Riverview." It was "Warehouse-view." We've stayed in Red Wing in the past and will visit again in the future. But we'll never again stay at the overpriced, over-hyped St. James Hotel. I wish I could upload photos of our room. Absolutely appalling.
