This is a 3-star resort, but the experience did not meet expectations. The staff was not welcoming, the concierge was frequently unavailable, and beach and pool service took over two hours. The only positive service was valet and room service. The pool and beach loungers lack proper covers and are plastic. Considering we paid over $750 per room, we expected much better service and amenities

We stayed at The Rio Mar over the holidays with our 3 college aged kids. A couple things.. 1. The beach is wide open and beautiful. It’s Atlantic “sand” with waves but lovely and vast. Getting a beach chair (or pool chair) was no easy feat, but we decided to buy our way out of getting up at 6am to “save chairs” by renting a beach cabana. ($200). 2. The casino is new and smoke free. (Amazing-) 3. The hotel is located close to the rainforest for hiking and great restaurants. GO/RUN to Ocean Tu’ La Mesa, a food truck/restaurant right outside of the entrance. The owner fishes that morning and cooks that evening while his wife waits tables. In high season you need to call/email for a reservation otherwise just walk in. Probably the best meal I’ve had in my life, it’s BYOB. 4. The rooms were recently renovated and really nice. Lots of high end elements, including glasses, nespresso machine, great towels and robes. (I actually went online and ordered them bc they were so fabulous.). The staff went out of their way to white glove all experiences. Very nice touches. 5. We used the newly opened Spa. It was a great massage but no actually amenities (ie sauna, hot tub, spa pool, etc-) but enjoyed it either way. The gym is next to the spa and totally sucks- lol. I assume it’s on their renovation list. (It was kind of shocking- compared to everything else) 6. Food is way expensive, but fine. Uber works easily so go off property if you can for dinner. Palio was good but too expensive.

We never checked in was never told about the $150.00 per room hold fees that would be applied to my card or the $738.00 pay at the resort per room charge. Very over priced we already paid $5,400 to stay and they wanted another $2976.00 at check-in we had no where to stay at 2am and had to leave because we were not told of these hidden fees.
