KICKED OUT OF CANDLEWOOD SUITES IN HAZELTON, PA FOR LIFE SAFETY COMPLAINT
Kathy and I checked in about 4:30 pm on October 6. Our room was on the lower level. I think it was 104. I walked the wrong way down the corridor when I got off the elevator. I noticed that the Fire Sprinkler Test Room Door was open to the outside (see photo). I figured the staff was actively working. It's a bad safety practice to leave hotel or dormitory doors open to the outside, unattended. It leaves the floor open to violent criminals or vandals. In a Test Room, opening the wrong sprinkler valve will activate the fire alarm and empty the hotel. So vandals are a concern.
Around 5:30 we went to supper. I re-checked the Test Room and it was still open to the outside. This time I took photos. There was nobody in the corridor and nobody outside. We took the elevator to the Main Desk and I told the Assistant General Manager (A.G., I think?) the story.
He said that a crew was working in the area. I explained that I looked all around and nobody was there at 5:30 and the floor was wide open to the back yard. (photos)
I said I want this filed as a complaint and I request my room be compensated. A.G. said he had to check in with the General Manager (J.D.). This prompted several calls back to me as A.G. spoke to the General Manager and relayed his orders. They called the Police and kicked us out. (Full story on my Facebook.)
The recent improvements, interior do-overs, and upgrades really dressed up the facility and made our stay more enjoyable. The AC fan appeared to be louder than normal, although it did not interfere with our ability to get a good nights sleep.
Overnight stay. Everything was as expected. But only decaf coffee supplied in the room.

The lamp in the room was moldy and the bathroom was not very clean but spacious room and pet friendly.

Could be nice with a few tweaks.
It was a very noisy room. Heard every toilet flush from rooms beside us as well as the noisy highway right outside our window.
The bed felt like you were sleeping upside down. It also leaned towards the middle.
Place was nice, and staff friendly. Only negative was the room had a stale oder masked by air deodorants.

To be fair for this review I did not stay at the Candlewood Suites that night. However I did briefly walk into the room for inspection and it was fine.
But what bothered me the most it was on the "lower level" floor with no easy emergency exit in sight. I would have to take an elevator to get on the main level and exit. I immediately felt very claustrophobic. In case of an emergency evacuation I needed to see a convenient way out! And I realized the chances of this happening were practical till, but I just knew I would not have rested well at all.
Thankfully the receptionist understood and tried to find an alternative room. That was unsuccessful. I was not charged for my stay and again appreciated the staffs co-operation.
I left and was able to find an alternative stay. This was more of a personal issue than a property one.
