Great hotel downtown Victoria - charming!

This was a lovely stay - the staff at this hotel were exceptional. It is an excellent location - central Victoria downtown - handy walk to everything. It outwardly appears to have a bit of a sketchy element - connected to liquor store, and two pubs - but I was travelling with my two kids and we loved the old hotel glamour and downtown feel - and felt safe and well looked after for our weekend stay!!

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. We were upgraded to a king suite which was very bright and clean. Location was superb, just a short walk to restaurants, shopping and the harbour. Will definitely return again.

The Strathcona is an older hotel but is clean and comfortable.. The staff were very friendly - they upgraded us, as our room wasn't ready. Everyone we've dealt with has been extremely pleasant. We are within walking distance of everything we wanted to do. The only complaint is that the air conditioner is so noisy we have to turn it off to sleep.

Customer Experience Needs Aligning

Strangely enough, I had to register my husband’s name as an additional guest in the room, and the front desk clerk was adamant that I had to provide his full name, before I could be issued our room key cards. When I asked why, I was told it was for my safety (if they needed to evacuate, then they’d have a total headcount - - which they’d have from a guest COUNT, and not from guest NAMES). When I asked again later in the conversation, I was told it was for security. When I followed up with the GM the next day, I was told that it was for guest experience reasons - - many times, one party misplaces their keycard and needs a new one, but if they’re not a registered guest in the room, it’s a hassle to contact the registered guest to get them to come to the front desk and get a new keycard issued. Sure, I suppose I can appreciate the guest experience reason - but if I don’t feel the need to register my guest’s name, it shouldn’t be pressed, because I can guarantee the family of 5 who checked in simultaneously as us, weren’t asked to provide the full names of their teenage kids staying with them.

There was an open air, no roof disco, dance club outside of my window which is part of the Strathcona. I was basically in a disco until the closed early in the morning even though I was in my room the entire time. It was extremely loud, and I could not sleep.

The hotel was clean and close to everything. Transit is nearby to get to the Ferry terminal, or Butchart Gardens. The suite room was excellent. Staff are nice, but not encouraged to think. They will not let you use the bathroom before you check in, even if you have luggage and are obviously a traveler. Same goes for the bar, no id? If you have a walker and 85...they still ask for it. Hotel is great, too bad people are not permitted to think. Knowing this, I would still stay here again. Just be sure to go the bathroom prior to arriving, and carry your ID if you want to go to the Sticky Wicket pub.
