Rooms are nice, clean and comfortable. Main bar Redwood Room closed on Sunday and Monday, so never experienced it and chose this hotel for that amenity. Shame it was closed. Had to change rooms as rooms ending in “31” share a wall with service elevator which is very noisy all night long. It hums and clanks. No sleep first night. Moved away from service elevator and that was far better. Lobby is quiet and lifeless lacking fun energy. Dull captures it. Overall the hotel is nice but needs some ambience.

In general this hotel is a nice place to stay specially it is located in the heart of the city. Close proximity to public transport. Easy access to restaurant, pharmacy and convenient stores as everything is within walking distance.

The stay was great, the only thing I thought was super tacky and deceiving was I had breakfast in the Fredrick’s cafe this morning which would have totaled to about $30 and the total was $39. I asked why it was so high and the man said “taxes”. I was taken aback cause I’m from San Diego and I heard it was more expensive in SF but I thought that was crazy. So I asked for an itemized bill cause I wanted to see what the tax rate was. When he gave it to me, there was a $6 service charge on there. Which is fine- add on a service charge. But don’t run my card, give me a slip that says total, tip, final total- and when I ask why it came to the amount you said “taxes”. No, sir, you were trying to double dip on the tip! So the stay was great except for the guy at Fredrick’s who acted in poor taste. The eggs Benedict was good though.

Noise pollution

The rooms are nice and are cleaned every day. The heating is very very loud when it should reach the desired temperature. Sleeping is impossible, so always have to turn it off at night. This would be less good in winter. The fridge also whistles all the time.

Staff was not helpful at all, when we left a wallet in a room, asked staff for 49 hrs to please check if they found, they kept saying one thing,we dint find it, when I went and checked the room , we recovered the wallet.

The Clift, for many years, has been a very nice hotel in the Union Square area of San Francisco. It's pretty much as I remembered it from a stay maybe 25 years ago -- although updated probably a few times since. Although the neighborhood has a gritty urban appearance, my wife and I felt very safe and secure. The lobby, breakfast restaurant and spectacular Redwood bar are all very handsome and welcoming public spaces. The staff was both friendly and quite helpful. Our executive room with two queen beds was very clean and well maintained. Housekeeping was excellent. The overall value we received for what we paid couldn't be beat, especially in a city where prices are very high for lodging, housing and food. As to food, there are several pretty decent diners within a few blocks for breakfast and lunch -- although the restaurant in The Clift is every bit as good as any of those diners.
