Black Dog takes the traditional cabin architecture and gives it a modern twist. Natural light is a key element of this home's design, with large windows that let in the sun's rays and give you exceptional views of the forest beyond. Dogs are welcome, so bring your furry friends along for an adventure in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
--------------------------------------------
Indoor Spaces:
- Sleeping arrangements: Sleeps 6. The primary bedroom features a queen-size bed and an adjoining bath with double vanities and a shower/tub combo. A second and third bedroom both have plush double beds with a shared bathroom.
- Main level: Vaulted wood ceilings evoke the feeling of a mountain escape in this single-level home. Enjoy the views from the bank of windows and sliding glass doors along the walls that bring natural sunlight into every corner. Chill in the evening by the brick hearth with a wood-burning fireplace as you curl up on the comfy leather furniture. The kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of counter space, and the adjacent dining room overlooks the deck and surrounding woods.
- Black Dog comes with WiFi, AC, and streaming-enabled TVs.
- All Stay Blue Ridge vacation rentals include a complimentary starter pack with soaps, one roll of toilet paper per bathroom, a roll of paper towels in the kitchen, dishwasher pods, and trash bags.
--------------------------------------------
Outdoor Spaces:
- Black Dog is set on 13 acres of private land. Explore the land and keep a lookout for local wildlife, like deer, turkeys, and raccoons. Just be aware of bears!
- A wraparound deck features outdoor furniture for dining al fresco and a gas grill.
- Bask in the sun on the porch swing and soak up the Vitamin D.
--------------------------------------------
Local Surroundings:
- Black Dog is the perfect spot for exploring the area's best fishing and hiking spots. It's located close to the famous Helton Creek and is just 30 minutes away from Grayson Highlands State Park, where you can journey up the Massie Gap Trail to search for the wild miniature ponies that call the park home. Grayson Highlands offers a plethora of hiking trails, as well as a replica of a mountain settlement that showcases local history.
- From the cabin, downtown West Jefferson is less than 25 minutes away. You can explore the quaint streets to discover an array of shops and galleries, as well as many unique restaurants and breweries. Some of our favorites include Red Dog Bar & Bistro, New River Brewery, and Thong Summit Thai & Sushi, but you can find just about anything to suit your tastes.
- Even closer to the cabin is the town of Lansing, home to Molley Chomper Cidery and the Liar's Bench sandwich shop. Also in Lansing is the historic Creeper Trail Park, where you can walk scenic trails and fish in the historic NC Heritage Trout Waters. The whole family will love it!
- Ready for more adventure? Spend a day canoeing, kayaking, or tubing out on the New River. Bring your own boats and tubes, or journey out to one of the local outfitters to rent all the equipment you need. If you are visiting in the autumn, make sure to take your time and appreciate the fall foliage all around.
- For our winter guests, take a day trip up to Boone for some fun on the slopes at Appalachian Ski Mountain. Ski, snowboard, snow tube, or ice skate—whatever your heart desires. Downtown Boone also has plenty to offer by way of shopping and dining, so take it easy and enjoy your time there.
--------------------------------------------
Important Notes:
- Pet Policy: Two well-behaved dogs welcome. Must be leash and crate trained, two years or older, and 45lbs or less. $50 per pet, nonrefundable.
- Access: A short gravel road leads into Black Dog from the main paved roads. AWD or FWD recommended when traveling in winter.

Lovely, comfortable house in a secluded peaceful setting

We really enjoyed our time at the house. It was clean and comfortable and gave our group ample space. The large deck was great for relaxing, we enjoyed watching the hummingbirds on the beautiful Bee Balm flowers across the front porch. Hiking trail behind the house provided a nice, quick outing while we had iffy weather. My only complaints were that there was a faint smell of cigarette smoke that was really only noticable when entering, like someone who used to live there must have smoked, and you have to pack out your own trash. The dropoff for trash is a 20 minute drive away and requires that you take a badge from the house to drop it off...and then you have to return the badge to the house to avoid a $100 fee. So unless you want to drive home with bags of garbage in your car, plan on an extra 40+ minutes of travel included in your departure. I feel like taking care of this should be included in the cleaning fee. It was definitely an annoying inconvenience that I think should be disclosed before booking, but ultimately would not prevent me from booking again.

Beautiful location with access to Mt. Rogers area

My family and I really enjoyed staying at the Black Dog cabin in Grassy Creek. It was very comfortable and nicely appointed with quick access to Grayson Highlands and the Mt. Rogers area. The cabin location was very peaceful and remote, which is exactly what we were looking for to take a break from hectic everyday life. We would definitely stay here again. Great check-in/out process and Stay Blue Ridge was helpful in accommodating a last minute change. Great experience, highly recommend!

Secluded cabin among the trees

This cute cabin is perfect for a getaway to the mountains. It sits on the side of a mountain with plenty of land so you have privacy. The only visitors we had were deer. The large windows in the house provided a wonderful view. The deck is massive - there is plenty of room for outdoor entertainment. We loved having the large fireplace for cozy evenings. The house is well equipped, clean, and modern. I would love to visit again sometime soon! We're thinking of going in the middle of winter just to sit by the fire and watch for deer!

Best EVER!

Over the years we have stayed at many, many vacation rentals. But never before have we walked out of a property and said… No!... we would not change a THING – except to stay LONGER!!!! This was a last-minute trip for us, at the peak of the busy fall travel time. Therefore, we greatly appreciated Miranda’s help – quickly answering our questions and accommodating a special request. The pictures of this “cabin” do not capture the beauty of its magnificent, wonderfully-wooded, secluded setting; nor its interior design with its breathtaking views, perfect 1-story layout and tasteful, but oh-so-comfortable décor. And, everything was spotless! – never before have we stayed in a wood-beamed, high-ceilinged/windowed property that had NO cobwebs! The kitchen was well-stocked and neatly organized; and the perfectly clean propane grill on the deck was a joy to cook on! Although our stay was short, we enjoyed our trip to Grayson Highlands State Park and hike to see the wild ponies; exploring the beautiful backroads; a delicious lunch at the Havana Café’; and picking-out cheese and other goodies at the Ashe County Cheese Co. store. But most of all, we loved our time at the cabin!... watching both the sun and moon rise over, and light-up the treetops; relaxing on the amazing decks, listening to the birds and seeing deer chase each other along the ridge-top; walking our dog (who clearly loved his stay!); and especially - being lazy next to the cozy fireplace! Thanks for giving us the privilege of enjoying the wonderful Black Dog! We hated having to leave; but can’t wait until we are able to return.

Woods

I loved the location, and the house was cozy, but unfortunately the two guest bedrooms smelled like death. Something had died in the attic and was rotting. Three out of four of us got sick. There were mouse traps set up, but apparently no one had come to check them. So, besides the death smell, rotten, aweful, smell, everything was great!

Ladies weekend

Such a beautiful property!!!! It is out in the middle of nowhere but, the drive into West Jefferson is easy. Great in between location of West Jefferson and Grayson Highlands State Park. The only negative, which is nothing really, just a suggestion, is to have a larger trash can since we have to take our trash out. We checked out on a Sunday so this was not necessary but we filled are can up pretty quick. Overall, great trip and highly recommend!!!
