Travel to Singapore

Singapore comprises 63 islands. The main island, Singapore Island, is the area that most people visit. People travelling to Singapore will discover a country with a diverse culture; people speak numerous languages, and there's no single set of culturally acceptable behavior. From glitzy shopping malls to historical sites, there's something in Singapore for everyone. Let ebookers help you find deals on flights to Singapore, hotel accommodation and holiday packages.

Singapore Changi International Airport

Singapore Changi International Airport is located approximately 20 km (12.5 miles) northeast from the city centre. It's the second busiest airport in Asia and serves over 46 million passengers each year. The 3 main terminals – Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are linked via Skytrain. Over 100 airlines service the airport, including Singapore Airlines, United Airlines, Vietnam Airlines and Korean Air.

Transportation from the Airport

You can get from the airport to the downtown area via bus, shuttle bus, taxicab, train (Mass Rapid Transit) or rental car. The Airport Shuttle transports passengers to hotels in Changi for $9. The airport also offers a free shuttle bus that takes people to the Changi Business Park. To get to the city by train, you need to take the train from the Changi Airport Station to the Tanah Merah Station. From there, take the westbound train to the city. It costs $2 to take the public bus into the city, and the trip takes about one hour. Taxi stands are located outside the arrivals area of each terminal. Cab fare to Changi from the city costs between $18 and $38. If you need your own set of wheels, use ebookers to reserve a rental car. Avis and Hertz have rental-car counters in the arrivals area of the terminals.

Weather in Singapore

Singapore doesn't have distinct seasons. The average temperature ranges from 23°C to 31°C throughout the year. The weather is hot, humid and wet. Monsoon season runs from December to early March and from June to September. 'December to February are the best months to visit Singapore. The weather is cooler and Orchard Road is lighted up with Christmas while Chinatown celebrates Chinese New Year in a big way. Regardless of when you travel, make sure to pack lightweight clothing to keep you cool.

Highlights and Attractions

If you enjoy shopping, head to Orchard Road. The street is lined with upscale boutiques where you can find decent prices on name-brand fashions. If you're looking for a souvenir with an Asian flair, head to Chinatown, Arab Street or Little India. History buffs should visit the Kranji War Memorial, the Sun Yat-sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, the Raffles Landing Site and the Asian Civilizations Museum. If you're taking a family holiday, spend some time at the Resorts World Sentosa theme park, Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari, Gardens by the Bay, the Singapore Zoo and Underwater World. Other popular attractions include the Sacred Buddha Tooth Temple, the Thian Hock Keng Temple, the National Museum of Singapore and the Chinatown Heritage Centre.

Planning a Trip to Singapore

Singapore hotels
Convention

Going to the convention centre in Singapore is like entering a different world. Inside, the structure is crisp and modern, providing a cool respite from the heat outdoors. The centre's line-up varies from year-to-year, but can include food expos, medical trade shows, and lifestyle exhibitions.

Dining

Singapore's hotels serve cuisine that blends traditional spices with fine dining. Head to the city in July to experience the Singapore Food Festival and try famous Hainanese Chicken Rice or Chay Kuey Tiao (fried thick vermicelli in sweet sauce) that is unlike anything you can find at home. Take an authentic approach to Indian and Malay dishes by using your hands to eat. Local favorites at the hawker stalls and food courts are: Laksa (a coconut curry-base noodle), Satay (BBQ skewers with chicken, mutton, or beef infused with spices) and Hokkien Fried Noodles.

Shopping

Shopping is something of a national joy, which means many Singapore hotels are within easy reach of bustling malls. Shopping belt stretches from Tanglin Road to Orchard/Scotts Road to Marina Bay and Bugis. You can easily walk away with budget electronics, decadent designer goods, and dazzling local trinkets without venturing too far. Antique lovers can easily find the real thing or high-quality reproductions at Tanglin Shopping Centre and Dempsey Hill.

Major Points of Interest

When in Singapore the Night Safari is worth a go. Wildlife seems wilder at night, but if you don't fancy that, give the Singapore Zoo or River Safari a visit. The River Safari includes 2 resident giant pandas, Kai Kai and Jia Jia. Walk down Orchard Road to see towering skyscrapers, and then head to Singapore River for a photo with the iconic Merlion, the city’s mascot, then to Sentosa Boardwalk for a psychedelic experience in the evening. If performing arts are your thing, walk through the marina to witness spontaneous shows.

Sports

In Singapore, sports are open and accessible. New state-of-the-art National Stadium is part of Singapore Sports Hub addition. Thanks to the built-up nature of the city, open facilities are abundant. Nationally, running, football and basketball are popular pastimes. For a solo experience, head to Pulau Ubin to enjoy snorkeling through the nature or Pulau Hantu for the coral reefs.
