Lovely characterful Manor House

Lovely characterful building right near the Teasdale Steam Railway Museum. Very nice room with comfortable bed and good shower. The restaurant was closed when we arrived but we were recommended a couple of places that we could get a meal in the Town within walking distance so this was not a problem. Breakfast was possibly the best ever tasted all served by a very friendly, smiling lady.

The people who run the Manor were extremely welcoming and considerate. The lounge is really nice and comfortable, the room and en-suite were clean and breakfast was excellent. We’d travelled through appalling heavy rain and I was pleasantly surprised that the central heating came on in early September although Alston is at pretty high altitude and so it may be necessary. We had to go out for an evening meal because no food is available on a Sunday but I think it s on other nights. We went out at just after 6 PM and got a table at the Alston House but someone who arrived afterwards was turned away and had been turned away at the Cumberland Arms because they’d also stopped serving. It appears that you need to eat fairly early in Alston on a Sunday night or book beforehand. This isn’t really part of the review but may be worth bearing in mind.

Best on C2C. EXCELLENT

We stayed here half way through our C2C cycling trip and loved it. We will definitely be booking to stay again. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and the bedroom was very comfortable. We loved the bar and the upstairs residents lounge was excellent. Breakfast was by far the best of the trip.

Lowbyer Manor

Good breakfast and service. Room was clean and comfortable but shower needs sorting out, water far too hot and a huge step up into and down out of the shower cubicle. You have to indicate that you want your room cleaned i.e. Bed to be made, which we did not know about so came back to unmade bed and tea/coffee not replenished. Hotel is central for hiking/walking and cycling the superb countryside.

Friendly owners. Bar and restaurant NOT open so had to go out for dinner. A mattress topper, some padding on top of the mattress so I couldn’t feel the coils in the mattress would be good. Not really value for money

Lovely B&B with very genial hosts.

The hosts are very welcoming and engageing people. The building is lovely and well positioned. The facilities in the village are within walking distance even for someone with difficulty walking. The rooms are warm and reasonably comfortable although the matress was on the very firm side.

Great stop for cyclists & walkers

A quintessential old coaching inn with a Scottish host & English chef, this is a homely guest house which provides a quiet stopover on the C2C or walking in the surrounding beautiful countryside. The welcome was effusive and the room pleasantly spacious. Our beds were comfortable with crisp white sheets. The dining room reminded my son of Fawlty Towers but it couldn’t have been further from satire with excellent food and drinks served by the jolly staff. Breakfast was just as good; we opted for porridge, the proper stuff with big soft oats, then I had a full English, every ingredient being excellent, whilst my son had bacon with homemade American style pancakes & maple syrup. We were set up for the day! There’s also a lovely large guest lounge with very comfortable sofas, books galore and a relaxing atmosphere. We sat in there for an hour or two, me reading, him on his laptop making use of the fast WiFi. The bar has a good selection of Gin, beers and other drinks with an extremely reasonable & well selected wine list too. There were only two quibbles in the whole experience: our en-suite shower was more a drizzle and the remote for the TV in our room was dead. That only stopped me from watching the News in the morning which I might actually regard as a good thing! Would we return? Absolutely!
