The host contacted me the day before the stay claiming a water pipe had broken. They confirmed they would cancel the reservation and issue a refund, and stated they were already working with VRBO support. However, a week later, I still had not received a refund. I had to contact support myself, which turned into a frustrating process since VRBO had already released the payment to the host. It appears the host never actually initiated the support request as claimed or canceled the reservation.
