The two nights we were there the main dining/bar area was closed which limited our choice to the roof top area which was only open late afternoons. I did like the location as it made getting around Old San Juan very easy.

Alma is a visually stunning hotel, with beautiful design and excellent dining at Andaluz and Mar y Rosa. The food, drinks, and atmosphere are all top-tier. However, for the price, the overall experience fell short. My mom and I stayed for 8 nights, and despite the beauty of the space, the execution was lacking. Our room was never serviced earlier than 3:30pm, sometimes not at all. This appeared to be a widespread issue due to understaffing, not the fault of the hardworking housekeeping team. Noise was another major issue. There’s no soundproofing, so expect to be woken by other guests well into the night. The hotel advertises as family-friendly, but this is categorically false. You will absolutely overhear intoxicated guests returning to the hotel (we overheard multiple drunken arguments well past 3am). You can also hear any and all activity in the rooms next to yours. There’s no visible security presence. The keycard systems in place (in the elevators and main entrance) weren’t being used. Anyone could enter the building and access guest floors. Additionally, rooms lack deadbolts, which felt unsafe. We also noticed signs from nearby residents criticizing the hotel for noise and disruptive guests. While managing guest behavior is tricky, the lack of control impacts both locals and other visitors. In short, while Alma is beautiful and has great food, but it didn’t deliver the comfort, peace, or service expected at its price point. I can’t confidently recommend it.

I stayed at Alma Hotel this past weekend with my 13-year-old daughter. We checked in Thursday at 4PM and left Sunday at 4AM. The room had no windows. It felt dark, claustrophobic, and stuffy, with no way to get fresh air. The layout was awkward, without enough closet space for two people, no chair, and only one side of the bed had a nightstand, light, or outlets. They also put us in one of those “combined” rooms with a double door to the next unit. We could hear every move and every word from the people next door—it felt like we were sharing a room with strangers. During the three days and three nights we stayed there, no one ever came to clean. By Saturday we were running out of toiletries. I asked and was told rooms were cleaned daily and someone would come right away. That never happened - the bathroom was never cleaned, the bed never made and the sheets never changed, and even the garbage was never emptied (I did that myself, especially since remember the room had no windows.) Some staff were polite, but there was a general lack of warmth or attention. Also Hotels.com listed a bottle of wine as a perk. That never showed up either. For a roughly $370 per night price tag, I expected much better. I found the whole place pretentious and overpriced. Basic services weren’t delivered, and frankly, we should have been offered some kind of adjustment. Without even a gesture from the hotel to acknowledge that, I wouldn’t recommend staying here.
No table, no lighting fixture, no outlets on one side of the bed.
Double door leading to next room (where strangers were staying)
No windows (except for those tiny openings up there), no air circulation.

Great location for old town. Nice property and rooftop bar. Very small rooms. No room to lay a large suitcase. Bathroom good. No window coverings so very bright and extremely noisy. The voice carries from the bottom floor all the way up to the top as there is an open atrium. It was after midnight and they were dragging tables and chairs across the floor on the rooftop and couldn’t sleep. Had to call the front desk. We wouldn’t stay there again. No sleep!

The property itself is beautiful!! However I did not get clean towels for 2 days after requesting them several times. I also never received a phone in my room after asking a few times and I had to use my personal cell phone to call the front desk on all the above requests.

Not great. It is marketed/branded as a nice modern hotel but the experience is very different. High price to pay for what ended up feeling like a cheap backpacker hostel experience. The good: - nice restaurant and roof top - excellent coffee at the ground floor cafe - location The bad: The rooms! - Sound is the biggest issue. You can hear ALL doors opening and closing, and people walking and talking within a 2-3 FLOOR radius. Poor design choices. - Air conditioner rattled constantly. - Thin doors between rooms so you can hear your neighbours perfectly. - No windows in some rooms. This isn’t a huge issue, but the ventilation is poor. Mildew smell in bathroom because of this - Nowhere to unpack I could only recommend this hotel if you pay for a high-end room and are a heavy sleeper. Otherwise, look elsewhere. Very hard to sleep before midnight and after 6am.

Old San Juan Convenience

Hotel Alma was in an awesome location for Old San Juan exploration. We were hoping to have a room with two beds and windows but weren’t that lucky when we checked in. The rooftop pool was a perfect escape from the heat.

The water pressure was terrible, many fixtures were loose or crooked, the elevator was very small and incredibly slow. The pool was a joke and smelled like cat urine. The restaurant on the rooftop charged us $50 for bad oysters that they refused to credit. They charged us $35 a day at checkout which wasn't on their site or the Expedia site, even though we prepaid in full, which is illegal to do.
