Was a motel so we parked right in front of our unit. I brought my two Jack Russel's. It was easy to take them out to do their business. Rooms were roomy and clean. Owner's and their son were lovely and we enjoyed having dinner each day in the restaurant on site. It was delicious and fresh. White fish was to die for. will visit again!
Clean rooms, comfy beds, excellent food at the restaurant (the Brie Burger was amazing!!) friendly staff/owners. This place was conveniently located and met all of our needs!
One of the best place i have ever stayed . I was so unsure about choosing this place while i was road tripping from Regina , Sk to ontario. But like we say perception gets cloured by experience in reality . This place actually changed my views which got influenced by the bunch of reviews from the same sort of people . The owner is pretty cool and the restaurant is awesome .One of the best place to catch sunset too ... everyone should checkout this place and ask the owner to get direction to watch the sunset ...
We stayed at McCauleys Haviland Bay in Ontario which had a 9.4 exceptional rating on Expedia – I would rate it as the most exceptionally overrated place we have stayed. Based on the amount that we paid for 1 night I expected a very nice place. The information said the rooms had WiFi for up to 6 devices – maybe that meant 6 devices in the entire motel. We could not get stable WiFi for even 3 devices. The flat screen TV was useless because of the unstable WiFi.
There were no electrical outlets in the bathroom and too few outlets overall. You had to choose between various things to plug in - coffee maker, refrig, fan, light or personal devices – even though I had an extension cord - it was not useable with the existing receptacles. While one lamp had a usb port, it had inadequate power to charge my phone. At the very least power strips with usb and usc ports are needed. The refrig while very cute retro design makes an annoying buzz, so we unplugged it for sleeping. They claimed to have a ‘pillow menu’ – there were 2 pillows on the bed – 1 per person. The ‘individually furnished room’ had not a chair to sit on.
The picture is deceptive in that it makes you think that you are looking at the mountain – but that is across the highway and the picture has been ‘enhanced’ to some degree. I would rate this as a clean 1950s motel with a friendly proprietor with a 6.0 at the very most. For nearly $200 / night we felt we were ripped off.
Lake Supeior shoreline is a short walk away. Staff and owners were awesome. Very Pet Friendly which we appreciated.
Always ready with extra coffee too. Thanks again.
One of the bests! I'd ask the owner where they bought such the comfortable mattress' with pillows and soft bedding lol customer service was perfect! Everything was just excellent!
This place is absolutely gorgeous! We stayed here twice on our honeymoon road trip to Thunder Bay. Chris was a gem of a human! He made sure to take care of us and all of our needs! The rooms are clean and cozy. Loved all the food at the restaurant as well!
Beautiful location. Pretty beach/quiet road nearby. We did not avail of all family services available-it was raining. The owner was awesome - she stopped by to check in with us and advise the TCH to Thunder Bay was washed out and closed (due to earlier heavy rains). Offered us the next night booking, but also advised alternative detour we could use next day. We chose to take detour back to Thessalon, and onwards north. No hesitation to refer this property, and would use this property again in the future. With on property facilities and the beach less than 5 min stroll, it would make a perfect family stop. Not sure about restaurant or food availability, we did not need based on our travel times. Two thumbs up 👍
I’ve travelled northern Ontario a lot and stayed in places that were “ok”. This place was fabulous! Super clean & bright. Really comfortable beds & pillows. This exceeded my expectations and I would stay here again.
The room was quite lovely. A garbage receptacle would be helpful in the living area as well as the bathroom.
The bottom of the tub was somewhat stained. The TV reception and choice of channels was not great. Programs kept buffering and there was no choice of regular cable channels.
This is a very comfortable place to stay. It was very clean. Check in and check out was very easy owners are on site to help you with any problems that you may have. The restaurant was great with lots of interesting signage and decor. Everything we ordered was very tasty. We will definitely have future stays in this comfortable motel.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
My wife and I stayed one night at McCauleys. We liked the location 25 miles north of the Canadian Soo. The small refrigerator in our room was very nice as it not only kept our cooler foods overnight, but the attached freezer allowed us to re-freeze our cold packs as well.
What we did not like was that the bathroom had no electric outlet for a hair dryer, nor did the bathroom have an exhaust fan. My wife did not have good hot water for her shower and ended up with only cold water to wash her hair. Not a good way to start the day !
