HISTORY:
This large three-level Craftsman chalet-style heritage manor was designed in 1912 by renowned Canadian architect Samuel Maclure for a prominent local businessman who was well known for his involvement in the prohibition movement, his church community, and his role as president of the YMCA.
Over two decades ago, the manor was thoughtfully converted into seven self-contained suites. Each suite is uniquely designed with its own character and personality, ranging from efficient studios to spacious two-bedroom accommodations, all featuring private kitchens and bathrooms.
Formerly known as Trutch Manor Suites, the property was, for many years, one of Victoria’s beloved bed-and-breakfast destinations. Today, it continues its tradition of hospitality as a family-operated boutique neighbourhood hotel under its new name, “Larkspur Manor Suites.”
The name “Larkspur” was chosen to pay homage to Victoria’s reputation as the “City of Gardens.” The larkspur flower, an old-fashioned bloom that comes in many beautiful shades, is often associated with love, affection, happiness, strong bonds, and a pure heart. We feel it beautifully reflects the spirit of our manor — warmly welcoming guests from all walks of life to create meaningful memories, whether visiting for a special occasion, a relaxing getaway, work, or time reconnecting with loved ones.
Since becoming the owners a few years ago, our family has been honoured to continue sharing this special heritage manor as a comfortable and welcoming home away from home for those visiting and working in Victoria.
OTHER DETAILS TO NOTE:
As the building was constructed in 1912, there may be creaks and squeaks on the floor or stairs which are to be expected from this vintage of building.
If you appreciate buildings with characters and old world charm, then you come to the right place.
This suite is on the second floor (the top floor) of building. There are stairs to the building and to the suite, (sorry no elevator), and it is not wheelchair accessible. As such, it will be challenging for those with mobility difficulties.
The bathroom is an ensuite, which is in the bedroom.
The couch can be pulled out into a double bed, not queen size bed.
Our posted rate is for double occupancy. Each additional guest after 2 is $45/night.
Laundry is in the basement of the building, free of charge. There is a set of stairs going to the laundry room right across from the main entrance of the building. Laundry hour is between 9 am - 8 pm.
We have motion sensor security cameras on the outside of our building which stay on during 24/7. One at the main entrance, one on the side of the building above the gate, one near the fire escape at the back of the building, one above Unit 7 entrance, and one on the garage facing our parking lot. We do not have any recording devices inside the building or in any of the private spaces.
Sometimes my 7-year old dog, Cosmo, a medium-size Labradoodle, stays with us. You may see him play outside in the courtyard. He is super friendly. However, if he sees you for the first time, he may bark at you. If you are nervous around dogs, please let us know and we will limit his presence outside.
