I chose the hotel because of its superb location, in-between the cathedral and the High Street. It was an added bonus to discover that it's a lovely hotel in other ways. I would particularly mention the (predominantly young) staff, who were super-helpful and friendly. Some reviews suggested the decor was a bit tired, and in a few places perhaps a bit of redecoration would not come amiss, but overall I loved the interior, full of interesting and welcoming spaces (and including some striking Modernist stained glass in the foyer). Breakfast and dinner were excellent. I would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone planning to visit Winchester.

Disliked: Property conditions & facilities
Poor wifi
Warm shower
High parking charges not mentioned when booking
Staff friendly, but not enough of them as regards servicing room. Plus, TV so old didn’t even receive ITV, so couldn’t watch the rugby! Great location and lovely city.
The staff were so helpful and friendly in all areas, reception, breakfast restaurant and bar. A really nice atmosphere and very easy check in and check out.
As someone who stays in hotels 2-3 nights per week and has stayed in numerous Mercure hotels I have never, ever had a worse hotel stay.
My room was freezing with just a small electric heater which I don't think had been on in months. I complained and was spoken to with complete indifference and advise another heater was in the wardrobe - there was no other heater. I eventually had one brought to my room but the bathroom remained freeing throughout. In the morning the shower was luke warm at best and the shower fitting had been installed incorrectly making it impossible to increase the heat.
On checking out I complained and was asked "were you in room 135 - that is an awful room" Thanks for nothing!
Was really happy with our stay and would definitely stay there again. Breakfast was perfect . Only gripe if anything we had a constant buzz/vibration sound in our room which I mentioned to reception. And the sealant around the bath could do with some attention. But overall really good.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, room comfort
In a good location but in need of moderation and a lick of paint
The staff were excellent. The building could do with a good brightening up. My heating didn't work and I had a cold shower in the morning. I loved looking out and seeing the Cathedral all lite up.
Nice hotel. Lovely rooms with nice bathrooms.
Staff lovely and very helpful, within easy reach of shops and restaurants. Lovely views of the cathedral and we enjoyed the cathedrals bells!
Was unsure about booking as it had a low customer rating, however in the whole we were pleasantly surprised.
The location is excellent just off the high street and overlooking the cathedral at the back. Parking was fine and there were
always spaces during our stay. Our bedroom was a good size and the bed very comfortable. No problem with the bathroom. If we were being picky I’d say the bedroom/ bathroom was a little dated but for what we paid was fine.
I have to say the hotel isn’t the most attractive visually. A two story boring block on the outside and very brown on the inside!! But again that wasn’t too important to us. Biggest disappointment was the breakfast. Very limited and basic using the cheapest ingredients. If you wanted mushrooms for example they were a special request which no one told you about!
So in summary would stay again but go out for breakfast.
