We have stayed in various French gites over the last 30 years and this one is perhaps the most underwhelming. It is compact, just big enough for four adults, however it only has 2 sunloungers and no comfortable outdoor chairs for sitting out in the sun.The kitchen is sparsley equipped - we bought a good knife for food preparation as the ones there were ancient and blunt, a butter dish, a teapot and a bread basket, all things every other gite we've stayed in have had and that I would consider essential. (We left these so it is now better equipped than we found it). The oven is a combi microwave, which worked adequately but is not the same as a proper oven, and whilst the induction hob was good, it only has 3 rings. Overall only just about adequate to cater for a family of four. The wifi and internet was 'flakey' at best with some devices able to get an internet connection whilst others couldn't. I think the router is in the adjoining onwers property so we were unable to hardwire any devices or add a booster. The lounge area on the mezzanine is not big enough to seat 4 people. My ended the holiday with a severe stomach bug, which the plumbing was not up to. The septic tank/pipework blocked several times, and with no equipment to deal with it I had to literally clear by hand :-( and to top it off the owner levied a charge of 40 to get it cleared on our departure! We spent more than that equipping the kitchen.Overall not somewhere I would rush to go back to.

House with a wonderful view

The house is located on top of a hill surrounded by beautiful countryside. The owners who live next door were very kind and helpful. There are only two houses on that hill. They are totally isolated, and we enjoyed the peace and quiet. The house is well equiped with everything you need. We spent a lovely week. Château de la Roche is worth a visit, as well as Lyon easily reachable by train from Tarare a town half an hour away from the gîte. .

Peaceful, comfortable rural gite with an excellent view.

A great base for trips into Lyon and for exploring the local area. This gite is simple, straightforward, well equipped and comfortable. Large windows with good shutters make it light and airy. It's in a very peaceful location 1km from the village, but not totally isolated. To the rear there is a lovely sheltered garden that is a real sun trap. The front has a great view over the Loire Valley, to Roanne, and in March - snow-topped peaks on the edge of the Auvergne. Buzzards, lizards and other wildlife, all seen from the gite. Good wood-burning stove for the chilly evenings plus efficient electric heaters. We visited Lyon (loads to see and do), Thiers, Vichy and Roanne (good little Art Gallery & Archaeological Museum) - plus motor tours around the local area - authentic and beautiful rural France. Good small supermarket in St Just la Pendu (10 mins by car). In Tarare (20 minutes by car), larger shops and good rail links into Lyon (easier than driving in). We were blessed with blue skies and sunshine all week.

This is the first time that I have given a 5 star rating. The gite is in a wonderful location.

Set in the hillside of France this gite as been lovely restored by the owner Dominique. Look very carefully at the brickwork and you will find a particular stone with the date the building was build with the initials of the builders and that of the person who paid them. The gite is well equipped and very comfortable. On arrival you are greeted with a bottle of red wine from the local region. Sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine looking at a beautiful sunset if you are very quiet you will see the wild deer grazing in the field with a evening chorus of the crickets and the occasional cuckoo. The gite is located just outside the sleepy village of chrissiamont which boasts of a small cafe and shop, the people are very friendly give them a wave and they will wave back with a smile. Dominique is very helpful and can advise you on most issues and places to visit. Marvin gaye the soul singer sang a particular song where ever I lay my hat that's my home well I layed my hat at this gite it was truly my second home.

Beautiful setting

Comfortable home with stunning scenery. Very quiet rural area. Bedrooms on separate floors ( useful to know if have very young children). Shower is excellent and great to have a washing machine. Some instructions for the combination type oven would be really useful.

Idyllic Setting

Lovely setting overlooking a wide expanse of beautiful French countryside. Easily reached by car, only an hour or so West of Lyon. The property itself I would say is ideal for a family of four, or a couple. It is clean and well maintaind. I would say if you cook whilst on holiday it doesn't have as many utensils and pots and pans as you may wish but enough to get by. It was a bit cold on our arrival but the property warmed up quickly with the aid of the wall heaters. The mezzanine area in particular gets warm quickly. Due to the rural setting make sure you stock up on essentials before you arrive, there is a decent sized fridge / freezer, a mini oven, microwave and full sized hob. Dominique was a very pleasant, friendly and unobtrusive host and once introduced will not trouble you but is available if needed. If you want a getaway from it all break, this is the place for you!

Famille Rajohnson
