The Neighborhood:

Malia is located on the north coast of Crete, approximately 35 kilometers east of Heraklion International Airport, making it an easy base for exploring central and eastern parts of the island. The town itself combines a historic core with a long-established resort area. In Malia Old Town, about 1 kilometer south of the main beachfront, visitors can stroll through narrow streets lined with traditional houses, small squares, bakeries, and family-run tavernas that reflect everyday Cretan life. Just 3 kilometers east of the town center lies the archaeological site of the Malia Palace, one of the most important Minoan palaces in Crete, where ruins of courtyards, storerooms, and ceremonial spaces give insight into Bronze Age civilization in a quieter setting than larger sites.



Malia also serves as a convenient starting point for cultural and scenic excursions. The famous Knossos Palace is located about 37 kilometers west, near Heraklion, and offers a deeper look into Minoan history with reconstructed sections and extensive ruins. The Lassithi Plateau lies roughly 25 kilometers south of Malia and provides a striking contrast to the coast, with mountain views, traditional villages, and fertile farmland. The beaches around Malia are varied and easy to access, each with its own character and clear distances from the town center. Malia Beach runs directly along the resort area and is less than 1 kilometer from most central accommodations, featuring long stretches of sand, organized sunbeds, water sports, and beach bars. Potamos Beach, about 2 kilometers east of the center, is wider and less developed, with a more natural feel and views toward the archaeological area, making it popular with those seeking quieter surroundings. Stalis Beach is located roughly 3 kilometers west of Malia and is known for its gentle waters, making it particularly suitable for families and relaxed swimming. Sarandaris Beach, near Hersonissos and approximately 12 kilometers from Malia, consists of small sandy coves with rocky edges and clear water, ideal for snorkeling and peaceful afternoons by the sea.
