The gorges of Oppedette as well as Rustrel or the Colorado of Provence with its red ocher rocks are also spectacular excursion areas. Also take advantage of the popular cedar forest and ochre cliffs of Roussillon, and stroll through some of the most officially beautiful mountain villages in all of France. Also worth a detour are the towns of Lourmarin, Gordes and Lacoste. The latter is known for the ruins of a castle that was once the residence of the famous Marquis de Sade. Discover the town of Apt, a stronghold of candied fruits and therefore affectionately known by the French as the jam kettle. Forcalquier, with its majestic citadel and rich cultural offerings, will also delight you. For many years, Forcalquier has magically attracted writers, painters, sculptors and other artistic groups. The people of the town are friendly, and every Monday morning the pleasant smells of the colorful market permeate the whole town. Farmers, producers and artisans gather here every week to sell their products and creations.
