Not really what we expected from the photos and description. We booked a terrace room which turned out to be a room accessed downstairs through the very busy hotel pub and facing directly into the pub windows and its courtyard, with the beer terrace above the room. We were told that pub customers are asked not to use the courtyard after 9pm. We asked for a different room and staff were very good at finding us a small double room in the main building, which was OK although storage was a bit limited. If you want to leave luggage, be aware they don't store it in a secure cupboard - it's left out on view in the lobby next to the reception desk (not staffed all the time). We were told it was because it's an old building and there's no space.

Not 5* and expensive for being in a sound box.

The "Terrace" rooms are noisy during the day with bar customer's using the area immediately outside of the rooms to smoke and talk loudly in groups. This was encouraged by a separating door to the bar being deliberately kept open (using a heavy plant pot) by some staff, even though reception staff kept closing it. Overall, it was impossible to rest in afternoon with the bed just less than some 10 feet away from the noise / smoke coming from outside. With the door open, the noise from the bar was also clearly heard well into late afternoon. Whilst reception was apologetic, and on several occasions closed the door, other staff from the bar kept opening it using the plant pot and, in addition, did not attempt to enforce any of the non smoking signs on the tables. On the raising this matter in the morning on checking out, I was given some weak excuse about some other door? not working / broken for some time and that this was their normal practice!

This is a true luxury inn. The building is historic, but updated with modern convenience and beautiful finishes. Very nice restsurant and bar, but walkable to dozens of other venues.

Great hotel, noisy area at times.

Excellent hotel, great rooms and food. Shame the kicking out time for the pub opposite was soo noisy though. Woke up at 1, 2 and 3am to shouting and fighting.

The positives first. A great central location. Easy walk from the train station. Staff was great. The beds/bedding were very comfortable. Super soft robes and a lighted vanity were great perks. The only negative was the room location. We were in 18 which faced the street (jackhammering going on until 9:30pm). This is obviously not the hotels fault. However, this room is next to the staff room, an office and an exterior door. Every time one of those doors was open/closed/slammed it rattled our door/room. On the Tuesday after Easter, the staff was in and out of those doors no less than 30 times between 6am-7:30am. Unfortunately, no sleeping in that morning. The doors opened significantly less the following morning so it was better but still disruptive. Also, the kitchen is on the other side of the room, so you also had the noise of the carts bringing supplies to it. I understand it’s an old building and noises will be heard, but truly the staff should be more mindful to be quiet when going in and out of the staff/office rooms and the exterior door.

Fantastic hotel our favourite in York.

Fantastic hotel Def our favourite in York, location is amazing and the breakfast is do die for Sets you up for the day. This is our second time in two years at this hotel and we will only stay here. It's not cheap £450 for two nights but at Christmas time....who cares.

Lovely place to stay in a central location

Had a wonderful two night stay here. The room was clean and had everything we needed. Tassimo coffee machine as well as a kettle and tea options. Dressing gowns and slippers as well as towels. Room was tidied and restocked before our second night, extra milk delivered for the morning to our doorstep. Absolutely wonderful place. We ate here for one evening meal, food was delicious and served in good time. Had a great time.

Definitely worth staying.

Excellent staff, kind, clean and polite; most certainly made you feel welcome. A place i fully intend to go back to. The room was clean, a couple of niggles such as the vanity light not working properly though the staff were straight onto it and fixed within a jiffy. It had been working when previously checked. The breakfasts were excellent value and table service was prompt, very prompt considering some places where i could be waiting 20 minutes. A wonderful spread of continental, fruits, pastries, cereals and juices along with full or part English options. Cups and sauces would be preferable to mugs though. The evening meals were limited in choice, though what they did present was again, excellent and the service i cannot fault.
