Family weekend break - Nov 25. This is more of a sports club with rooms rather than a hotel. Our hotel room was modern and clean. Staff generally friendly and helpful. Pool and spa were very good. Golf was good but the fairways were not as good as my local courses. Racket sports and gym facilities looked great. Food quality was surprisingly good but the breakfast is totally self service and very limited. The bar, dining area and lounge areas are a major let down. Rooms were cold and uninviting and the bar closed at 10:00pm on Saturday night !!! Nice enough but don't go expecting Hilton and Marriott style service and facilities - The Essex could do much better.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel from the 3rd to the 4th of November. Although the staff decorated the room for an extra charge (which my boyfriend arranged for me for my birthday), the overall stay was disappointing. We stayed in the County Suite, which was spacious, but the sleep experience was terrible. There was no air-conditioning, and the room was unbearably hot all night. The fan provided did not work, and when we tried calling reception there was no answer. The pillows and mattress were also old and very uncomfortable, leading to a restless night. To make matters worse, when we checked out, no one asked if we enjoyed our stay — otherwise I would have provided this feedback directly. Unfortunately, we would not return. Awful stay.
