We booked a post-New Year getaway looking for a cheap change of scenery and didn't mind that the hotel is currently being refurbished. While the room was basic, it was spotless and boasted an incredible view of the sea. There was something "Overlook Hotel" about the atmosphere (in a good way!), and watching the wild weather from the comfort of a warm bed was a highlight.
However, the breakfast experience was a letdown. The main draw here is the view, but we were stopped from sitting by the windows. A rather surly chef told us to sit in an adjoining room facing a wall, pointing out that two high chairs were blocking the way as a "barrier." When we tried to find another seat, we were told to move again. It feels like a missed opportunity not to let guests enjoy the scenery they came for.
On the plus side, the reception staff were lovely and the holiday decor was very festive. The sea view ultimately made the trip worth it, but the dining service could use some of that same friendliness.
