And speaking of fishing, you can charter one of many boats to take you for a fishing excursion you will never forget. There are also water taxis that can take you to local islands or go on a sightseeing adventure. You might see the wild horses on Shackleford Banks or even get a glimpse of Blackbeard! Construction of the present fort began in 1826. Fort Macon was a federal prison from 1867 to 1876. You will walk through the fort and feel that you are back in time.
